The single vineyard that makes the Intellego Syrah, was planted in 2003 on a southeast-facing slope of decomposed granite and sits deep in the heart of Swartland’s Paardeberg. It is lovingly farmed by Jurgen without the use of glyphosate. The fruit was left on its bunches, and fermented using Jurgen’s usual ‘semi’-carbonic approach for 11 days – where it is held in a closed tank similar to the method made famous in Beaujolais, France. This wine was bottled after being naturally fermented and aged in used 400L barrels for 10 months.
The first thing you notice about this wine is the colour; deep and bright, right to the rim. The nose is striking, with notes of blackberry, raspberry, rose, dried herbs and earth. On the palate, youthful red berry fruits come to the fore with the familiar (for those who drink Intellego wines often) pomegranate crunch on the finish. It has impressive depth and density of fruit, given the medium-bodied nature of the palate, with bright acidity and fine-grained tannin giving the sensation of refreshment. Classy wine.
