Julien Schaal Alsace Grand Cru ‘Sommerberg’ Riesling 2022

SOIL : Dominantly granitic with black and white micas. This soil, is rich in mineral elements, and ideal for vine growing.

VINEYARD : From a 45 years old vineyard, the Sommerberg is situated on a very steep slope (45°), face due south, and exceed 400 metres of elevation.

TASTING NOTE : Lovely, intense minerally nose with complex lime fruit, a touch of honey and some spice. Rich but bone dry palate with lovely mineral extract and intensity. Quite tight with good acid structure; good potential for development.

David’s notes: Notes of lemon, lime, pear and pineapple. Open and fruit-driven with lovely florals. Mineral acidity, no petroleum characters as it ages because of the granite. Very fragrant and open. Steep slope, south facing, converting to organic. 45-50 year old vines.

We are extremely pleased to offer you our latest imports from Julien Schaal in Alsace.

Situated in the northeast of France, on the border with Germany and Switzerland, Alsace is one of the great historic wine regions of France. Predominately producing wines from the aromatic varieties of Riesling (21%), Pinot Blanc (21%), Gewurztraminer (20%), and Pinot Gris (16%). Increasingly Pinot Noir (11%) is becoming more important.

There are 51 Grand Cru classified vineyards in Alsace. Most of these are historic vineyards, and are seen to be the very top quality. The Grands Crus represent just 5% of the total Alsace vineyard area.

Julien and Sophie Schaal work with 6 separate Grands Crus (all Riesling), and we hope one day to import them all.
