Julien Schaal ‘Mountain Vineyards’ Chardonnay 2022

R185.00

The grapes come from Elgin – The Cape’s coolest viticultural area and has a unique climate and topography, consisting of an upland basin plateau, surrounded by mountain ranges on all sides. The Terroir is very stony and mixed with red clay.

Although based in Alsace, Julien produces wines in South Africa as well (based at Paul Cluver in Elgin). This is a wonderfully pure expression of Chardonnay with hints of citrus and crushed almonds. Fermented in a combination of new and old 300l oak, and stainless steel tank with limited malolactic fermentation. Beautifully balanced with elements of freshness, richness and concentration.

These are South African wines, via French hands. Julien and his wife Sophie live and make delicious Riesling in Alsace, France in the village of Saint-Hippolyte in the Colmar region. Julien’s wines show elegance while remaining concentrated and are true to both origin and cultivar.
