Lourens Family Wines | Mixed Case 2024

This white blend, the first wine he ever crafted, is dedicated to Linda Carien, his wife. We hope she enjoys many bottles, savoring each one as a reminder of Franco's love and dedication.

What is now dubbed the Cape White Blend - this wine is Chenin Blanc based with four other varietals.

"52% Chenin Blanc, 27% Verdelho, 13% Colombar, 5% Grenache Blanc (five days skin contact) and 3% Palomino sourced variously from Piekenierskloof, Stellenbosch and Voor-Paardeberg. Matured for 10 months in old 300- and 500-litre barrels. Some floral perfume before stone fruit, orange, spice and a little waxy character on the nose while the palate has good fruit weight, moderate acidity and a gently savoury finish. A wine with a subtle oxidative quality, nicely tangy with a little bit of phenolic grip. Alc: 13%.

"44% Grenache, 28% Cinsault and 28% Syrah, all sourced from the Swartland, some 40% fermented with stems, before maturation lasting 10 months in old 300- and 500-litre barrels. Expressive aromatics of red and black berries, orange, olive, lavender and herbs while the palate has good fruit concentration, snappy acidity and crunchy tannins. Juicy on entry but ends savoury, the different components combining to good effect.

62% Chenin Blanc, 30% Verdelho and 8% Grenache Blanc (five days skin contact). Grapes sourced from across the Western Cape. No Colombar and Palomino as was the case in 2021 and 2022. Stone fruit, lemon, soft citrus, potpourri, ginger and a little yeasty complexity on the nose. The palate is intense but not weighty – good clarity of fruit and snappy acidity before a finish that’s dry, more salty than grippy. Alc: 13%.

The only wine not sporting a family member - sports a sketch of the trellised vines it come from. A super unique system that is planted on an incredibly steep slope creating hardier vines.

"From a Piekenierskloof vineyard planted on sandstone at 750m above sea level in 1977. The nose shows stone fruit, orange and some waxy character. The palate is powerful – dense fruit, big acidity and finish that has just a touch of quinine-like bitterness. Thick textured in the best sense and super-flavourful. Alc: 14%.

"42% Grenache, 29% Cinsault and 29% Syrah, all sourced from Swartland. 40% whole-bunch fermentation. Complex aromatics of red and black berries, fennel, fynbos, olive brine, cured meat and pepper. The palate displays concentrated fruit, lemon-like acidity and fine tannins, the finish deeply savoury. A vintage of sophistication and nuance. Alc: 13.5%.

"Grapes from a Piekenierskloof vineyard planted in 2008. 25% whole-bunch fermentation. Attractive aromatics of red berries, pomegranate, rose, herbs and spice. Pure fruit and bright acidity, the tannins lightly grippy. Well-structured, this shows particular agility and finesse. Alc: 14%.
