Spioenkop ‘1900’ Chenin Blanc 2020

R265.00

This Chenin is part of Spioenkop’s earlier drinking ‘1900’ range. The pale lemon straw colour is matched with a clean linear fruit purity of fruit. This beautifully balanced wine has an intense core and an elegant, crisp and fresh acidity.

“Floral nuances to Golden Delicious apple flavours on 2022. 50% oaked portion (10% new, 10 months) is well integrated & adds texture, 24 months in bottle boost the flavourful appeal. 2015 was last tasted.”

Wine tasted by Meryl Weaver. Platter’s. 87pt

Belgian native Koen farms a hilltop in the middle of Elgin WO he planted to vines in the early 2000s. A qualified engineer and former sommelier, he has a very clear vision for what he wants to achieve. His wines reflect his European heritage while still reflecting the terroir of Spioenkop. The two new single-site Chenin Blancs are particularly interesting – the ‘Sarah Raal’ is from ferricrete soils and the ‘Johanna Brandt’ is from shale. Brilliant, fine examples of cooler-climate South African Chenin Blanc. Both the Riesling and Pinotage wines are among the best in South Africa.
