Spioenkop Pinot Noir 2021

R290.00

Pinot Noir is winemaker Koen’s passion project, a wine that he does not make every year but adores. This is subtle Pinot Noir delivering delicate ripe plum, black cherries and red forrest berries. A lovely backbone structure with black pepper, rhubarb and pomegrante complexity to it.

“Fragrant red berries with earthy forest floor notes & some savouriness on 2021, lively acid ensuring vibrancy. Subtle oak backing from 11 months in mostly older barrels, polished by 3 years in bottle. Refined & restrained, will reward cellaring. First since 2016.”

Wine tasted by Meryl Weaver, Platter’s. 88pts

Belgian native Koen farms a hilltop in the middle of Elgin WO he planted to vines in the early 2000s. A qualified engineer and former sommelier, he has a very clear vision for what he wants to achieve. His wines reflect his European heritage while still reflecting the terroir of Spioenkop. The two new single-site Chenin Blancs are particularly interesting – the ‘Sarah Raal’ is from ferricrete soils and the ‘Johanna Brandt’ is from shale. Brilliant, fine examples of cooler-climate South African Chenin Blanc. Both the Riesling and Pinotage wines are among the best in South Africa.
