Spioenkop Riesling 2020

R325.00

100% Riesling. Elgin WO

On the nose fine mineral fragrances of ferricrete soil, charcoal and ginger with unripe pineapple, white stone fruit and fennel with strong undertones of quince and lemon. The palate has the typical Spioenkop waxy mouthfeel. A dry, steely Riesling with a nice richness.

From low-yield vines, 2020 reverts to drier, racy styling after softer 2019 (91 pts). Bracingly fresh & feisty ruby grapefruit, quince & lime flavours backing some delicate floral notes that lift the developed kerosene character from 48 months in bottle.

Wine tasted by Meryl Weaver, Platter’s. 94pts

Belgian native Koen farms a hilltop in the middle of Elgin WO he planted to vines in the early 2000s. A qualified engineer and former sommelier, he has a very clear vision for what he wants to achieve. His wines reflect his European heritage while still reflecting the terroir of Spioenkop. The two new single-site Chenin Blancs are particularly interesting – the ‘Sarah Raal’ is from ferricrete soils and the ‘Johanna Brandt’ is from shale. Brilliant, fine examples of cooler-climate South African Chenin Blanc. Both the Riesling and Pinotage wines are among the best in South Africa.
