Tim Atkin 95+ 2024 Mixed Case

Dense crimson-red colour, bursting with scented aromas of cranberry, raspberry, crème de cassis and macerated cherries, supported by notes of oak spice, tobacco leaf and Fynbos shrub. The palate is rich, luscious, and powerful, with a framework of juicy plum and black cherry flavours complimented by French oak, potpourri spices and an earthy herbaceous undertone. The wine offers layers of dark chocolate, bramble berries and Asian spice along an integrated and gentle oak-driven essence on the lengthy finish. A wine that is age worthy, complex and elegant.

Paper Kite is picked from an old block of Semillon with some natural Semillon Gris mutations(Gris cuttings from this vineyard were planted for The Tin Soldier vineyard).

“Grapes from a vineyard planted in 1976. Vinification as for the Cinsault. Top notes of rose, potpourri and fynbos before plum and black cherry on the nose. The palate is light-bodied with mouth-watering acidity, and firm but fine tannins which lend a pleasant, black-chocolate-like bitterness to the finish. 94/100.”

100% Cabernet Franc

The Cabernet Franc grapes are sourced from 14-year-old, trellised vines from the lower Helderberg on granitic soils. The vineyard is 2km from the coast. The maritime effect is most favourable, especially in the hot February-March months in Stellenbosch. Leaf removal in the bunch zone (during November/December) is an important practice in this vineyard to let enough sun in to prevent vegetal flavours. The grapes were picked on 20 February.

They were sorted and crushed (no whole bunch). Spontaneous fermentation took place in open top fermenters with very soft handling during fermentation, only two punch downs per day. The wine was matured in 225L older French oak barrels for 9 months. It was sent thorough a rough filter before bottling in December 2023.

Small portion fermented in barrel. 72 months on the lees. The nose shows citrus, yeasty complexity, earth and spice while the palate is rich and detailed but simultaneously entirely vital. Layers of flavour, the mousse nicely creamy, the finish long and slightly salty. 95pt

75% of grapes from Lynedoch (destemmed) and 25% from Polkadraai Hills (whole-bunch fermented). Matured for 10 months, 55% in barrel and 45% in concrete. Top notes of fresh herbs and fynbos before red and black berries as well as earth. Light bodied with plenty of refreshment factor – pure fruit, lip-smacking acidity and an uncompromisingly dry finish.

"Grapes from two Paardeberg vineyards, one planted in 1966 and the other in 1980, the older vineyard fermented and matured for 10 months in concrete tank, the younger in 500-litre barrels. Peach, citrus, fennel and some flinty reduction. The palate is super-dense with punchy acidity and a deeply savoury finish. All elements of the wine very tightly gathered, the result being something extraordinarily balanced and seamless.
