Christian Eedes (winemag.co.za): As ever, the 2019 vintage of Vuurberg White made by Donovan Rall delivers plenty of grunt. Consisting of 58% Chenin Blanc, 13% Verdelho, 8% Roussanne, 8% Semillon, 8% Viognier and 5% Grenache Blanc sourced from across the winelands, the nose shows peach, apricot, vanilla, spice and some leesy complexity while the palate has dense fruit and an oily texture offset by bright acidity. A hearty, flavourful affair (alcohol is 14%). 91/100

Production by Donovan Rall is small and the wines are unapologetically bold without being overly heroic. Blending different cultivars from different areas, partnered with judicious use of new oak, gives the wines complexity and a sense of luxuriousness, both on the nose and on the palate. Importantly, Donovan manages to create balanced wines, even at the fuller-bodied end of the spectrum. Very classy multi-regional wines in the best tradition of the “new” world.
