We are incredibly proud to announce that Solo Wines by Carl Schultz has officially joined the Ex Animo portfolio. If you’ve followed South African wine for any length of time, Carl needs no introduction. After 32 years at the helm of the acclaimed Stellenbosch farm, Hartenberg Estate, and veteran member of the CWG, he is one of the most respected figures in the industry.
The name Solo reflects Carl’s independent venture, but also the solitary excellence of the specific vineyards (even rows) and varieties he selects. His philosophy is rooted in a commitment to structure, longevity, and an unwavering refusal to rush quality.
Solo Wines is Carl stepping away from the big Estate model to do something purely for the love of the craft.
Carl is a wonderful addition to the Ex Animo portfolio, he bridges the gap between the ‘Old Guard’ skills and the modern ‘New Wave’ spirit of independence. To have a CWG member focusing on micro-parcels is a win for anyone who values pedigree and soul.
He isn’t chasing volume or trends; he’s looking to express power and grace. Whether it’s finding Merlot in the Tradouw Highlands, or sourcing Cabernet from the weathered Koffieklip soils of Bottelary, he is obsessed with quality of site. Carl is only making tiny quantities, just 1,300 bottles, of these first release wines, with the goal of producing wines that not only bring joy upon release, but also ones that will be singing in 20 years time.
It’s a rare thing to see a master with 38 vintages under his belt this energised. As he told us, “I’ve always believed we haven’t produced the best wine we can yet…“. His first releases have been collaborative projects, searching for small, quality parcels across the winelands. Solo Wines is at the very start of its evolution, and we are very excited to see (and taste) what the future holds.
A high-altitude Merlot, classically made to highlight purity and elegance. The wine displays fine, polished tannins and a real weight on the palate, delivering depth and structure without overt heaviness. Bright, ripe fruit is balanced by a fresh acidity and subtle oak influence, resulting in a refined and well-rounded wine.
“From Joubert-Tradauw outside Barrydale. Includes dash of Cabernet Sauvignon. Matured for 22 months in barrel, 60% new. Red berries, plums, floral perfume and a hint of pencil shavings on the nose. The palate is rich and rounded, delivering succulent fruit, bright acidity and soft, silky tannins. There’s a plush, enveloping quality here, the kind that marks out the best examples of the variety. 93/100” – Christian Eedes, Winemag.co.za
The nose is expressive and layered, aromas of black pepper, crushed violets, dark plum and subtle fynbos, underpinned by granite-derived minerality. The palate is concentrated yet poised, with savoury spice and dark berry fruit framed by finely textured tannins. Balanced oak maturation adds notes of cedar and clove without overpowering the fruit. Structured and elegant, with a long, dry finish and excellent ageing potential.
“From Wellington. Matured for 18 months in barrel, 25% new. The nose is expressive with notes of red and black pepper, cured meat and white pepper. The palate is rich and hearty, broad in shape with a smooth texture and plenty of flavour. A slight warmth to the finish reminds one of the wine’s origins, but many will like this wine’s generosity. 92/100” – Christian Eedes, Winemag.co.za
Aromas of cassis, blackcurrant and dark plum are layered with graphite, cedar and subtle tobacco leaf. The palate is powerful yet refined, showcasing concentration from thick-skinned berries grown in koffieklip soils. Firm, well-structured tannins provide backbone, while balanced acidity ensures freshness and longevity. Extended maturation in French oak adds complexity and structure, culminating in a long, layered finish.
“From Bottelary, Stellenbosch. Matured for 19 months in barrel, 50% new. Black cherry, cassis, some leafiness, vanilla, pencil shaving and wood spice on the nose. The palate is full but never overblown, showing sappy fruit, bright acidity and fine, well-knit tannins. Balanced and structured, it has both immediate appeal and the capacity to evolve. 95/100” – Chrsitian Eedes, Winemag.co.za
This case is the first vintage of Solo Wines, the exciting new chapter for acclaimed winemaker Carl Schultz.
After three legendary decades at Hartenberg Estate, Schultz has channeled his mastery of South African terroir into this signature trio: a 95-point Stellenbosch Cabernet Sauvignon defined by its “koffieklip” soil mineralities and graphite-edged power; a savoury, spice-driven Wellington Syrah that balances fynbos aromatics with a generous, hearty texture; and a plush, high-altitude Merlot from Barrydale that redefines the variety through its succulent fruit and silky, “enveloping” structure.
These are wines of immense precision and site-specific purity, offering a rare opportunity to own the inaugural releases from one of the Cape’s most respected “Kings of Shiraz” and “Godfathers of Riesling” as he steps into his own solo spotlight.
