Beeslaar Wines

Beeslaar Wines is the family label of Abrie Beeslaar, one of South Africa’s best-known Pinotage specialists. The project began in 2011, when Abrie was offered fruit from a distinctive parcel on the Stellenbosch side of the Simonsberg.

Abrie studied viticulture and oenology at Stellenbosch University and worked at Windmeul, Swartland Winery and Kanonkop. His experience with Pinotage shapes a small range built around clarity, structure and the grape’s ability to express site. Jeanne Beeslaar manages the administrative and logistical side of the family business.

Abrie Beeslaar is one of the country’s great Pinotage specialists. His wines show the variety at its most complete: generous and distinctly South African, but also structured, balanced and capable of developing for years. Beeslaar may be a small family label, but the wines belong in any serious conversation about modern Pinotage.

Pinotage remains the centre of the project. Abrie approaches it as a fine-wine variety rather than as a stylistic category: vineyard material, ripeness and tannin quality determine the shape of each wine. The result is a firm but measured expression, with fruit, savoury detail and oak kept in balance. The range has expanded beyond the original Pinotage, but the same disciplined approach runs through the other bottlings.
