Thorne & Daughters makes wines that embody a thoughtful, confident expression of South Africa.
Founded by John and Tasha Seccombe in 2012, the wines draw on old Cape vineyards to create elegant, restrained wines with a strong sense of place.
Thorne & Daughters is celebrated for wines of precision, finesse and remarkable depth — layered, nuanced and endlessly captivating.
What makes the range so compelling is the way each wine feels honest and unforced. There is clarity and freshness throughout, but also depth, texture and a an unmistakeable skill that is synonymous with Thorne & Daughters.
The 2025 vintage is a beautiful expression of this philosophy in action. Following the darker, more brooding profile of 2024, the 2025 wines show a more lifted and ethereal character, wines of elegance, precision and remarkable harmony. The growing season was a gentler pace, allowing for thoughtful picking decisions and giving the fruit time to reach phenolic ripeness without sacrificing freshness or energy.
Across the range, there is a striking sense of calmness and purity. The wines are not built on power or extraction, but rather on transparency, texture and detail. Acidity feels naturally integrated, tannins are fine and quiet, and the wines carry an effortless balance that speaks clearly of both site and season.
The Semillon’s, in particular, are exceptional in 2025. Through careful farming, lower yields and patient harvesting, John has steered the wines away from overt greenness towards a more layered spectrum of citrus pith, waxy texture and savoury complexity.

Tin Soldier continues to evolve through subtle refinements rather than dramatic changes. The 2025 vintage is particularly expressive, showing notes of blood orange peel, ripe citrus and stone fruit alongside a gentle grip and refreshing acidity. Perfumed and full of personality, the wine balances texture with freshness in a way that has become a hallmark of the style. Distinctive and occasionally controversial, Tin Soldier remains one of the Cape’s most original white wines.
“From Swartland Semillon Gris, half the grapes spending approximately a week on skins. The nose is particularly expressive with notes of nectarine, orange peel, purple grape soda and a subtle potpourri nuance. The palate shows impressive fruit concentration and a creamy texture, balanced by well-integrated acidity. Some gentle phenolic grip lends shape and persistence to an otherwise juicy, rounded wine of considerable charm. 95/100”
Thorne & Daughters 'Paper Kite' Old Vines Semillon 2025
Paper Kite comes from a remarkable vineyard planted in 1963 and continues to deliver wines of extraordinary consistency. Farmed with intention and care, the site produces fruit with both concentration and finesse. The 2025 vintage feels especially elegant, combining citrus and stone fruit with a subtle savoury complexity and a long, persistent finish. More than a varietal wine, Paper Kite is an expression of a place that has proven itself year after year.
“From a Swartland vineyard planted in 1963, matured for nine months in barrel, 25% new. The nose shows notes of lemon, orange and peach alongside straw, flinty reduction and a subtle yeasty quality. The palate combines remarkable fruit purity, managing intensity without excess weight. Bright acidity provides focus while the finish is dry and persistent. Vivid, sappy and impeccably composed. 96/100”
Thorne & Daughters 'Snakes and Ladders' Sauvignon Blanc 2025
Since its introduction in 2019, Snakes & Ladders has become an essential part of the Thorne & Daughters story. Grown high in the Skurfberg, where cool Atlantic air moderates the dry conditions, the wine offers a very different interpretation of Sauvignon Blanc. Rather than overt green flavours, the focus is on texture, ripeness and complexity. The 2025 vintage shows layers of citrus, tropical fruit and herbs, supported by remarkable freshness and a savoury finish. Inspired by the great white wines of Bordeaux, it is a style that rewards both the table and the cellar.
“Grapes from Citrusdal Mountain. Exotic aromatics of lemon, grapefruit, pineapple and a hint of herbs. Super-concentrated, rich and smooth but equally carries a big acidity, the finish dry. As ever, makes a big impression. 94/100”
Thorne & Daughters 'Cat's Cradle' Old Vines Chenin Blanc 2025
Cat’s Cradle has become one of the most loved wines in the Thorne & Daughters range. Over the past few years, John has refined the sourcing, focusing on old Swartland vineyards in the Paardeberg and west of Malmesbury to bring greater depth and character to the wine. The 2025 vintage is particularly successful, combining notes of citrus, stone fruit and wild herbs with a gentle waxy texture and a savoury edge. There is plenty of concentration, but the wine remains fresh and energetic. Generous without being heavy, Cat’s Cradle captures the balance and restraint that define the Thorne & Daughters style.
“Grapes sourced from two Paardeberg vineyards on granite soils and a third site west of Malmesbury on iron. The nose opens with a subtle yeasty note before unfolding into layers of citrus, peach, potpourri, dried hay and herbs. The palate is pure and finely etched, carried by lively acidity and a pithy finish that stops short of austerity. Intricate and detailed, yet equally immediate in its pleasure. 97/100”
Thorne & Daughters 'Rocking Horse' Cape White Blend 2024
Rocking Horse sits at the heart of Thorne & Daughters and the 2024 vintage is one John is especially excited about. A slightly smaller crop brought impressive fruit concentration, while extended time in tank allowed the wine to come together naturally before bottling. Chardonnay plays an increasingly important role in the blend, adding subtle flinty notes and tension. Layered and complex, yet remarkably composed, Rocking Horse combines richness with freshness in a way that makes each glass more compelling than the last.
“Source from sites across the Western Cape. 28% Roussanne, 23% Chenin Blanc, 23% Chardonnay, 19% Semillon, 7% Clairette Blanche. The aromatics are complex and compelling, moving from flinty reduction to beeswax, flowers and herbs, then all manner of fruit – citrus, apple, stone fruit, mango and pineapple. The palate is dense and layered, with punchy acidity and impressive length. A wine of presence, combining poise with texture. 98/100”
Thorne & Daughters ‘Wanderer’s Heart’ Cape Red 2023
This vintage of Wanderer’s Heart is what the Thorne & Daughters team consider a Cape Red blend. A wine that is built around various incredible vineyards found all over the Western Cape.
“45% Grenache, 36% Syrah, 11% Carignan and 8% Mourvèdre, sourced from Olifantsberg in Breedekloof and Gabriëlskloof in Bot River. The nose is complex yet restrained, with notes of red and black berries, olive brine, fynbos and white pepper. The palate is focused and linear – almost austere – with pure fruit and fresh acidity, the finish long and dry. More detail and finesse than previous vintages. 94/100.”
