Intellego Syrah 2024

R350.00

Intellego Syrah 2024 comes from an Abbotsdale vineyard on iron-rich soils. Fermented entirely as whole bunches, it matured for twelve months in barrel and four months in tank.

Its label is connected to the Chenin Blanc artwork, with the two illustrating different seasons and their effect on the vineyards. Together, the Chenin Blanc and Syrah offer a starting point for exploring Jurgen’s single-variety wines before moving through the blends, pét-nats and skin-contact whites.

“Lovely fruit purity, bright acidity and powdery tannins. Succulent, elegant and long.”

Christian Eedes, Winemag.co.za · 94/100

Intellego is the Swartland wine project of Jurgen Gouws, who started the label in 2009. Originally from the Eastern Cape, he now makes his wines in the Paardeberg, working with vineyards across the region.

His approach starts with getting to know those vineyards. In the cellar, he uses spontaneous fermentation and works with techniques such as skin contact and whole-bunch fermentation according to the wine he wants to make.

Texture is a recurring focus, particularly in the whites. Working with the same vineyards over several years has helped Jurgen understand how they respond to each vintage and refine his approach. The range includes pét-nats, Chenin Blanc, skin-contact whites and reds ranging from light blends to single-variety Syrah and Pinotage.
