We are delighted to announce the release of three new vintages from Pieter and Ann Ferreira, available this Monday. This launch also marks a significant milestone: the official beginning of a new chapter in Pieter’s storied career.
After decades spent shaping the Cap Classique category, this marks the moment Pieter can finally speak, fully and openly, about his and Ann’s wines; now made and released as a formal partnership. “Partners in crime”, as Pieter puts it. The intent is clear: to lead by example, lift the category, and continue to show what South African Cap Classique can be when it is driven by site, patience, and conviction.
Total production currently sits at 20,000 bottles, with careful plans to grow; but never at the expense of quality or integrity.
The wines remain vintage-specific, made without reserve wine, and from seven geographic sources, six of which form the consistent backbone of the range year after year.
– The range is an expression of Chardonnay, Pinot Noir and the Birdsong Blanc is the interaction between the two.
Pieter Ferreira 'Birdsong' Extra Brut Cap Classique 2023
The core expression of the range, built around the interaction between Chardonnay and Pinot Noir.
Sourced from three Chardonnay parcels (Robertson, Darling, Durbanville) and two Pinot Noir parcels (Napier and Stellenbosch). The nose is light, airy and generous, with buttery richness and subtle herbal notes of basil and mint. The palate opens with lime zest and brightness from Chardonnay, finishing with a gentle lift of red berry fruit from Pinot Noir. Primary and expressive, yet grounded by extended lees contact.
The name ‘Birdsong’ nods both to Pieter’s long love affair with sparkling wine, and to Sebastian Faulks’ novel, a quiet reference to patience, time, and devotion.
“71% Chardonnay (Malmesbury, Robertson, Paarl, Napier) and 29% Pinot Noir (Darling, Paarl). Primary fermentation in a combination of stainless tank, ceramic pots and barrel. 39 months on the lees. The nose shows floral perfume, a hint of reduction, and suggestions of citrus and strawberry. The palate is fruit-forward with well-integrated acidity and a soft, creamy mousse – well balanced and pleasantly soft-edged. Alc: 11.72%.” – Christian Eedes, Winemag.co.za
Pieter Ferreira 'Birdsong' Rosé Extra Brut Cap Classique 2021
An unashamed expression of Pinot Noir, built on shape, texture and longevity rather than colour.
Fruit from Durbanville is for precision and brightness, Robertson contributing depth with and Stellenbosch structure. Only the first 400 litres per ton are used for colour extraction, resulting in a very subtle hue. The palate is pure Pinot Noir: sour cherry, savoury spice and broad, confident structure. Pinot Noir loves time on cork, and this wine shows the reward, opening beautifully in the glass, with both freshness and gravitas.
The name ‘Birdsong’ nods both to Pieter’s long love affair with sparkling wine, and to Sebastian Faulks’ novel – a quiet reference to patience, time, and devotion.
“100% Pinot Noir. 57% of grapes from Napier, 28% Durbanville, 15% Stellenbosch. Primary fermentation in a combination of stainless steel and ceramic pots. 55 months on the lees. Complex aromatics of red cherry, orange, rose, underpinned by yeasty complexity and subtle notes of mushroom and earth. The palate shows good fruit weight, pleasantly sour acidity and a fine mousse before a dry finish. There’s a vinous, multi-dimensional quality here that SA sparkling pinks rarely achieve. Alc: 11.63%.” – Christian Eedes, Winemag.co.za
The most focused and ambitious wine in the release, and the clearest expression of Chardonnay’s flexibility and diversity.
Fruit selection is precise:
Robertson for limestone-driven salinity and lemon zest
Darling for tension and precision
Stellenbosch for depth and richness
Fermentation took place across stainless steel, traditional 205L Champenoise barrels, and ceramic pots, introduced to preserve brightness while adding texture. The wine shows a nervous, energetic tension that promises excellent ageing potential.
“100% Chardonnay. 40% of grapes from Napier, 33% Darling and 27% Robertson. Primary fermentation in a combination of stainless tank, ceramic pots and barrel. 55 months on the lees. The nose is refined and cool-toned, showing lime, lemon and green apple, some floral perfume and a touch of flinty reduction. The palate is precise and unshowy, offering condensed fruit, vibrant acidity and a creamy, finely textured mousse, carrying through to a long, saline finish. More understated than the remarkable 2020 but still streets ahead of most local bubbly. Alc: 11.72%.” 95/100 – Christian Eedes, Winemag.co.za
