Vulpes Wines
“I fall in love with a site and block, and the more time I
spend there, the more I want to make the best possible wine that shows off its character.”― Nuschka de Vos
Summary
Vulpes Wines was founded by Nuschka de Vos, who released her first vintage in 2022 after six years at Reyneke Wines in Stellenbosch, one of South Africa’s leading biodynamic and organic producers. Vulpes focuses on naturally crafted wines made with minimal intervention and a strong respect for site. The name Vulpes (the genus of the true fox) is a nod to Nuschka’s Dutch surname “de Vos,” meaning “the fox,” and reflects both her heritage and her interest in these inquisitive animals.
Nuschka grew up on an organic farm in Plettenberg Bay, where her close connection to nature and animals took root. That experience continues to shape her winemaking: sustainability and organic farming are non-negotiable, while her cellar work relies on patience and gentle handling to let the
vineyards express themselves. As she puts it: “I fall in love with a site and block, and the more time I spend there, the more I want to make the best possible wine that shows off its character.” Her debut release, Chama Chenin Blanc 2022, came from two dry-farmed bush-vine parcels on the granite slopes of the Paardeberg. With its vibrancy, saline edge, and intensity, it quickly drew attention, earning Tim Atkin MW’s description as a “salty, intense, focused delight, shimmering with acidity and vibrancy.”
By 2023, the range expanded to include:
- A second, slightly riper than the 2022, Paardeberg Chenin Blanc from older vines, Chama
- Velox Chenin Blanc, from a high-altitude, once-neglected Citrusdal vineyard, showing a very concentrated palate with crisp acidity
- Cana Cabernet Sauvignon, a medium-bodied, intensely flavoured wine, with grapes sourced from Reyneke’s biodynamic Polkadraai property
Each wine reflects Nuschka’s precise but restrained approach — spontaneous fermentations, older barrels, and a deep understanding and focus on bringing out vineyard character.
Looking ahead, Vulpes will continue to grow her range. A couple wines are planned for future release, but scale is not the priority. For Nuschka, the goal is authenticity: producing wines that celebrate the vineyards and sharing them with those who appreciate individuality, purity and place.
