The Wines
Luddite Shiraz 2019
The benchmark Shiraz from the southern Cape, Niels Verburg has been making Luddite Shiraz since the early 2000s. Now joined in the winery by his daughter Alice, and as always wife Penny in the vineyards, Luddite is a proper family run business.
Sadly 2019 was a tiny vintage for the Luddites, about 65% down from a ‘normal’ vintage. Small amounts of 2018 magnums and Chenin Blanc (super rare) also available.
The best Syrah vines on Joostenberg are planted in the rockiest soils hence the name “Klippe Kou”, which translated from Afrikaans means “chewing rocks” (literally) or “enduring hardship” (figuratively). Although the vines struggle in the first few years after planting, once the roots are well established these rocky soils produce intensely flavoured grapes and characterful wine.
ORGANIC.

Pieter Ferreira bubbles
Christian Eedes of Winemag, after tasting the maiden vintage of Pieter Ferreira, wrote: “This is categorically the best bottle-fermented sparkling wine I’ve ever drunk from South Africa and given who it’s made by, it comes as no surprise”.
The new 2016 Blanc de Blancs, 2015 Rosé, 2017 Extra Brut are all available now from this world-class bubbles producer…
The newest addition to the portfolio – we have taken a keen interest in “Poenie’s” wines since he started. Made in tiny quantities, but at the highest level of quality.
Very cool to see so much of his fruit coming from Piekenierskloof – and how that manifests in the glass.
Trizanne Barnard is on a roll and pushing all sorts of boundries in the Cape South Coast: skin contact Sauvignon Blanc (Sondagskloof) & Chardonnay in limestone-rich soils (Benede-Duiwenhoksrivier).
She won back-to-back Best Syrah of Show at the Trophy Wine Show for her Elim Reserve Syrah.
We have all these and and a few others from her including some back-vintages…
If you are in Cape Town late November, join us for the second annual ROCK N ROLBAL event. A Sunday spent drinking wine, eating food, playing rolbal and listening to the hits of the 1980s.
We will have a competition in the morning, and then super chilled, laid-back rest of the day. Barefoot and drinking while rolling are both encouraged.
Wines will be available to drink on the day at retail prices.
