The Kühne, Hogan & Clarke Carignan 2020 is the very exciting latest addition to our “& Clarke” range – made by Jocelyn Wilson of Hogan Wines fame. Only 252 bottles were produced.
The "& Clarke" Label
The “& Clarke” label is a vehicle for Ex Animo to showcase single site wines. These are wines that we either have made specifically for us, or that we bottle from wines already made that meet our high expectations of quality.
The name of the wines always follows the following structure:
FIRST NAME – The grower’s name (Friedrich KÜHNE in this instance)
SECOND NAME – The winemaker’s name or brand (HOGAN)
THIRD NAME – Our name always comes last (CLARKE)
The name structure of the wine is our way to give credit where it is due. We try and draw a clear line between the vineyard and the glass, and celebrate each of the people whose skills and passion have created each wine.
The Carignan vineyard on Welgegund Farm, grown by Friedrich Kühne.
What is Carignan?
According to the “bible” [Wine Grapes by Jancis Robinson, Julia Harding, José Vouillamoz] Carignan, or Mazuelo, or Cariñena probably originated in Aragón in north-east Spain. The mere fact that is has dozens of synonyms across Europe (especially in Spain, France and Sardegna, Italy) indicates that it is a very old variety.
Wine Grapes explains it as characterised as being “vigorous and highly productive, late-budding and very late ripening, so that it needs a hot climate to thrive“. There is not a lot of Carginan planted in South Africa – and most of it is in the warmer areas as it loves the heat. If you haven’t had a straight South African Carignan before, it generally has a similar fruit profile as Grenache and Cinsaut, but with more spice and structure.
Jocelyn loves what Carignan brings to her top red wine under the Hogan label, the Divergent; exotic spice, acid and crunchy fruit. Craig Hawkins from TESTALONGA is also a believer in the magic of Carignan, having produced the Follow Your Dreams under his Baby Bandito label for some years.
The wine
100% Carignan from 19yo bushvines grown on the Welgegund farm in Wellington by Frederich Kühne.
Jocelyn Wilson (Hogan Wines) de-stemmed the grapes, fermented them naturally with gentle extraction and matured the resulting wine in old oak for 16 months.
Selected by David and Jeannette Clarke, this wine is super fresh and crunchy. It has a supple palate with loads of red fruits and exotic spice. Dry, delicious modern South African medium-bodied red wine.
