We are very excited to be able to release the 2019 vintage of the Intellego Syrah.
Jurgen Gouws
Originally from the Eastern Cape, Intellego owner and winemaker Jurgen now calls the Swartland home. He has worked with some of that area’s most celebrated names (Eben Sadie, Tom Lubbe, Craig Hawkins).
Jurgen favours a natural approach – think organic farming and minimal intervention (no yeast, acid, enzymes or fining; limited sulphur and filtration) in the cellar.
“Our philosophy remains minimal intervention during the winemaking process and the wines are a celebration of the hard work done in the vineyard. For us it is intuitive winegrowing, an evolution through experimentation on small pockets of land selected in the Swartland Appellation.”
Jurgen Gouws, Intellego
The vineyard and the cellar
The single vineyard that makes the Intellego Syrah, was planted in 2003 on a southeast-facing slope of decomposed granite and sits deep in the heart of Swartland’s Paardeberg. It is lovingly farmed by Jurgen without the use of glyphosate.
The fruit was left on its bunches, and fermented using Jurgen’s usual ‘semi’-carbonic approach for 11 days – where it is held in a closed tank similar to the method made famous in Beaujolais, France. This wine was bottled after being naturally fermented and aged in used 400L barrels for 10 months.
Intellego Syrah 2019
The first thing you notice about this wine is the colour; deep and bright, right to the rim. The nose is striking, with notes of blackberry, raspberry, rose, dried herbs and earth. On the palate, youthful red berry fruits come to the fore with the familiar (for those who drink Intellego wines often) pomegranate crunch on the finish. It has impressive depth and density of fruit, given the medium-bodied nature of the palate, with bright acidity and fine-grained tannin giving the sensation of refreshment. Classy wine.
