The new 2018 Reserve white from Trizanne Barnard has been released. This is the partner wine to her 2018 Reserve Syrah that won the Best Red Wine at the Trophy Wine Show in 2020.
2018 (unlike most of the Cape Winelands which was affected by both heat and drought) was a very good vintage for Elim and it shows in this wine; it is a lovely combination of ripe fruit, refreshing acidity and a luxurious mouthfeel.
Texture and structure is so very important in all wine. This includes white wine, where most of the conversation and explanation tends to be restricted to fruit character and acidity. One of the reasons Trizanne was the very first producer we started working with was her mastery of texture. Even her “entry level” TSW Sauvignon has amazing weight and texture.
Harvest started in the second week of February and continued for two weeks. The different parcels were whole bunch pressed and fermented in old French 500L and 225L oak barrels. There was extended lees contact before blending (adding to the wonderful texture).
Rich aromatics of lime, fresh pear, winter melon, hazelnuts and a touch of herbs. This intensity is continued on the palate with integrated flavours of fruit, spice and minerality: it is luxurious yet finely detailed. The elegance of the savoury finish is noticeable as the flavours slowly fade. A delicious, elegant wine that leaves the drinker refreshed.
