The new vintage 2021 J H Meyer Signature Wines from Stompie have been released and are now available to order. These wines are all limited in availability.
Stompie
Johan Herman Meyer (a.k.a. ‘Stompie’) started JH Meyer Signature Wines in 2010 after being inspired by working harvests with various wine producers around the world. He is currently focusing on Chardonnay and Pinot Noir from the cooler areas of the Western Cape.
Stompie only works with organically-farmed fruit and uses no overtly transformative or corrective techniques in the cellar. 100% wholebunch fermentations for the Pinot Noir wines with no additions of any sort are hallmarks of his approach.
With his wife Anri, Stompie bought land on top of the Piketberg Mountain in northern Swartland in 2018. They have since built a house, a cellar and planted Chardonnay, Pinot Noir, Sauvignon Blanc and some Rhone varieties. The high altitude terroir here is unlike any other in the Swartland, so Stompie has worked with SAWIS to set up a new ward: Piket-Bo-Berg WO. We eagerly await the wines from these exciting vineyards.
Style
Stompie’s wines are often primal and raw in the best sense. Offering delicious transparency of terroir and grape. Sometimes cloudy, but always exciting and visceral, they are in the leading pack of the South African avant-garde. They are not for everyone…
Vintage 2021
Vintage 2021 in South Africa was a very good one both for quality and quantity. Cooler weather in the ripening period allowed a later harvest than what is normal. This gave phenolic ripeness to the grapes without boosting sugars too much. The end result are wines of fruit weight, but moderate alcohols, and balanced acids and tannin.

J H Meyer Signature Wines 'Carbonic' Pinot Noir 2021
WO Elgin
Single vineyard wine, 100% Pinot Noir out of Elgin. As the name suggests carbonic maceration plays a huge role in this wine. Whole clusters (uncrushed) sealed in a tank for spontaneous fermentation with no oxidation. This preserves the primary fruit and perfume of the fruit with less extraction. Pale, electric and exciting. A precise and perfumed wine with lovely bright fruit and fine texture.
J H Meyer Signature Wines 'Cuvée NOS' Pinot Noir 2021
WO Cape South Coast
100% Pinot Noir. A blend of two vineyards – one in Elgin and the other in Elandskloof. Fermented wholebunch for 10 days with a daily punchdown. 22 more days on skins and stalks for post-ferment maceration and then pressed into 4000L foudre for elevage. Bottled after 12 months. Typical Stompie Pinot Noir; bright, full of life, crunchy tannin, with freshness and a sense of fun.
J H Meyer Signature Wines 'Palmiet' Chardonnay 2021
WO Elgin This is one of the first labels we sold when Ex Animo started in 2014. A perennial favourite for us with the ability to age (recently enjoyed a 2015). This is made from organically-farmed fruit and treated very oxidatively in the winery (more than a hint of flor on the nose and palate). Aged in old 500L oak and concrete eggs, it is pure and unadulterated, but not fruity. Earthy, saline and savoury. Strong Jura vibes resonating through this one…
