Ex Animo Wine Co. is thrilled to announce that the exciting and affordable wines of Trediberri are available in South Africa for the first time.
On a buying trip to Piedmont last year Ex Animo co-owner David Clarke visited a number of producers looking for more fabulous wines to import. One of the most impressive and surprising visits was to Nicola Oberto at Trediberri in La Morra.
The 2022 Barbera d'Alba is a fabulous wine that marries Barbera fruit richness with a Nebbiolo-like sense of structure.
The 2022 Langhe Nebbiolo is a brilliant, vibrant wine.
― Antonio Galloni, Vinous
Trediberri is a relatively new producer in Barolo, but has quickly built an impressive reputation. Nicola has an energy and passion that is infectious and visible in his wines. They are bright and juicy, with a real sense of vibrancy and purity.
"In the past decade a new estate, Trediberri, has created considerable excitement as the next great old school azienda."
― The Rare Wine Co.
Trediberri was founded in 2007 as a partnership of three men: Nicola Oberto; Nicola’s father Federico, and Vladimiro Rambaldi. Federico contributed prime family holdings in Torriglione and the renowned Rocche dell’Annunziata, and the three jointly purchased 5ha in La Morra’s historic Berri MGA. Nicola runs the estate today, and the project is named after the three partners and their common purchase: Tre-di-Berri, or Three of Berri.
“Nicola Oberto is one of the most dynamic, emerging producers in Piedmont today … my impression is that the best is yet to come for (this) small estate in La Morra.”
― Antonio Galloni, Vinous
A Quick History Lesson
The history of Barolo is fascinating. Its illustrious reputation predates the current Italian classification system, and was among the first areas (along with Barberesco, Brunello di Montalcino and Vino Nobile di Montepulciano) to be designated the highest category of DOCG (Denominazione di Origine Controllata e Garantita) in 1980.
The reputation of Nebbiolo, and especially of Barolo was one of great, but impenetrable wines that needed extended bottle ageing to be enjoyed. The traditional method of making Barolo includes fermenting with a long, slow maceration, often 30 days or more, and ageing in giant Slavonian oak casks (5,000-10,000L).
As a response to this, a group of producers moved away from long fermentations and large oak in favour of smaller French oak. The movement is encapsulated in this quote from modernist pioneer Elio Altare: ”I’m not interested in making great Barolo. I simply want to make great wine. And all the world’s great red wines are matured in barriques”.
The commune of La Morra in the north of the Barolo zone was the hotbed of this modernist winemaking movement in the 1980s and 1990s.
It is within the La Morra commune of Barolo that Trediberri is based. Trediberri is a relatively new producer (in Barolo terms) and Nicola is reviving the old ways of doing things in using large Slavonian oak, concrete and stainless steel.
The Barbera d’Alba is sourced from estate vines in Torriglione, along with grapes from a close friend who farms sustainably in Monticello d’Alba (Roero). And the Langhe Nebbiolo is assembled from a combination of high-altitude vines in Levice and Vicoforte (Alta Langa), plus younger vines in the estate’s La Morra holdings. Both of these wines are fermented and aged in concrete and stainless steel, and each offers a personality that is totally unique within its category.

Trediberri 6 pack | Barbera & Nebbiolo
This 6 pack contains 3 each of the Trediberri wines
The grapes come from Roero area and from Trediberri’s vineyards surrounding the hamlet of Torriglione, next to the winery. Barbera is the only variety that is green harvested in order to reduce yields. Alcoholic fermentation happens in concrete and stainless steel tanks and lasts 12-15 days. The wine ages for 7 months in concrete before being bottled, usually in April-May of the year after the harvest.
The 2022 Barbera d’Alba is a fabulous wine that marries Barbera fruit richness with a Nebbiolo-like sense of structure. Ageing is done entirely in cement. Ripe cherry, plum, lavender, rose petal and blood orange are front and centre in this juicy, inviting Barbera.

100% Nebbiolo
Denominazione di Origine Controllata
Vinification of grapes mostly coming from La Morra and Levice and a small part from Vicoforte and Monticello d’Alba (Roero). Alcoholic fermentation happens in concrete and stainless steel tanks and lasts 12-15 days. The wine ages for 7 months in concrete, steel and plastic, before being bottled, usually in April-May of the year after the harvest.
The 2022 Langhe Nebbiolo is a brilliant, vibrant wine. Vinification and aging in a mix of cement and tank keeps the flavors vibrant. Crushed rocks, mint, red-toned fruit, cedar and pipe tobacco all grace this exquisite, nuanced Langhe Nebbiolo.
