Nestled on Helshoogte, between Zorgvliet Estate and the small town of Pniel is a small farm called Vuurberg, owned by Dutchman Sebastiaan Klaassen since the early 2000s.
Originally the farm was intended to be used as a lifestyle property, but soon turned into a boutique wine producing farm, with a small cult following, producing Bordeaux varieties and Rhône style blends. Donovan Rall joined the project in 2010 and solidified the estates identity. Under his guidance, Vuurberg has developed into one of the Cape’s more quietly respected modern producers, known for wines that combine Stellenbosch structure with a more restrained, Rhône-influenced sensibility.
Producing only two wines, Rall draws from a range of carefully selected vineyard sites across the Cape, blending under the Wine of Origin Western Cape designation. It’s an approach that allows him to build complexity through different regions, soils, and varieties rather than relying on a single site alone. The philosophy combines the depth and structure of Stellenbosch fruit with the freshness, tension, aromatics, and savoury character found in regions such as the Paardeberg, Riebeekberg, Swartland, and Darling — all while maintaining balance, texture, and drinkability at the core of the wines.
If you are looking for a consistently good White and Red blend, these are the wines you need to be drinking.
