Some wines are made to be enjoyed young. Others simply refuse to follow the rules.
Craig and Carla Hawkins of TESTALONGA have never been one for convention, and his latest release is proof that even their most playful wines can surprise. Introducing ‘Thirty Three Ninja’s’ and ’33 Ninja’s’; two familiar Pét-Nats that have spent an astonishing 33 months ageing on their lees before finally seeing the light of day.
Originally bottled in 2023 as ‘I Am The Ninja’ (Chenin Blanc) and ‘I Wish I Was a Ninja’ (Colombard), these wines were held back in the cellar, allowing time to work its magic.
The extended lees ageing has transformed both wines. The bubbles are finer and more integrated, the texture richer and creamier, and the wines have gained an impressive level of complexity without sacrificing the vibrant freshness and electric energy that have always made TESTALONGA Pét-Nats so compelling. They remain unmistakably alive, but now with an added layer of finesse and depth that only patience can bring.
TESTALONGA El Bandito ’33 Ninja’s’ Colombard Methode Ancestrale 2023
Perhaps the bigger surprise of the pair, the Colombard demonstrates just how well this often-overlooked variety performs in the Méthode Ancestrale style. Zesty citrus, green apple and fresh herbs are complemented by a gentle creaminess and delicate biscuit notes developed during the prolonged ageing. It remains vibrant and refreshing while offering a level of complexity few would expect from Colombard.
TESTALONGA El Bandito ‘Thirty Three Ninja’s’ Chenin Blanc Methode Ancestrale 2023
The Chenin Blanc retains its bright citrus and orchard fruit character but now carries a beautiful savoury, brioche-like complexity from its extended time on the lees. The palate is textured and mouth-filling, balanced by crisp natural acidity and a persistent, refined mousse. It is both joyful and surprisingly serious; a sparkling wine that rewards slow drinking as much as casual celebration.
