Venus La Universal is the Montsant project of Sara Pérez and René Barbier, established in Falset in 1999. Both come from families closely connected to the modern revival of neighbouring Priorat, but Venus is very much their own project.
Sara divides her time between Venus and her family estate, Mas Martinet. She has long travelled the narrow mountain road between them in an old Citroën 2CV painted the same yellow as the Venus labels, a car that has become closely associated with the winery.
‘La Universal’ 2021 is a blend of Carinyena, Garnatxa and Syrah. The fruit comes largely from old vineyards between Piñana and Crossos, planted on deep clay-limestone soils. Fermentation takes place with indigenous yeasts, followed by extended ageing in large wooden vats and foudres.
Floral and savoury, with red cherry, darker fruit, dried herbs and earthy notes. The palate has depth and fine tannins, balanced by bright acidity and an unexpectedly light, energetic feel. A serious but very drinkable Montsant red, made with food in mind.
