Intellego Chenin Blanc 2024

R285.00

Chenin Blanc was the first wine Jurgen made under the Intellego label. The 2024 comes from a Paardeberg vineyard planted in 2002 on decomposed granite, which he has worked with since 2018.

It matured for eleven months in older 228-litre barrels on its lees without stirring, followed by five months in tank. Jurgen sees this vintage as a useful step towards the style he wants, with more time for the wine to develop before bottling and greater attention to texture.

“Lean yet paradoxically dense, with plenty of drive and a super-savoury finish. Tightly wound, somewhat esoteric, entirely compelling.”

Intellego is the Swartland wine project of Jurgen Gouws, who started the label in 2009. Originally from the Eastern Cape, he now makes his wines in the Paardeberg, working with vineyards across the region.

His approach starts with getting to know those vineyards. In the cellar, he uses spontaneous fermentation and works with techniques such as skin contact and whole-bunch fermentation according to the wine he wants to make.

Texture is a recurring focus, particularly in the whites. Working with the same vineyards over several years has helped Jurgen understand how they respond to each vintage and refine his approach. The range includes pét-nats, Chenin Blanc, skin-contact whites and reds ranging from light blends to single-variety Syrah and Pinotage.
