We are delighted to announce that the new releases from Jessica Saurwein of Saurwein Wines are now available.
“Jessica Saurwein is getting quite a lot of attention for her Pinot Noirs.”
― Jamie Goode, Wineanorak
Winemaker Jessica Saurwein comes from a long lineage of winemakers, and while her heritage may be German, her feet are firmly planted in South African soil. Working in harmony with nature, Jessica uses a light touch in the cellar. Her attention to detail and commitment to quality wines is evident in every glass.
Jessica’s wines tick all the boxes for lovers of cool-climate, high-quality wines
Each of her three wines are from different sites, and while the terroir may be different, Jessica’s seam of quality and finesse runs through them all.
Jessica’s wines tick all the boxes for lovers of cool-climate, high-quality wines. Throughout the range, there is an energy and liveliness that keeps you coming back for more. These wines are beautifully balanced and thoughtfully crafted. Jessica’s farming methods leave “gentle footprints” on the earth, and her wine leaves a deep impression on those who drink it.
The wines
Saurwein 'Chi' Riesling 2023
WO Elgin
Being half-German, Riesling is in Jessica’s blood and this shows in her style of her Riesling. The 2023 harvest provided lovely, ripe grapes, so there are notes of exotic and tropical fruits on the wine this year. This combined with the usual lifted, floral and citrus perfume makes for a gorgeously refreshing wine.
Taste fragrant citrus blossom, yellow stone fruits and white pear in this off-dry Riesling.
Saurwein 'Nom' Pinot Noir 2022
WO Elandskloof
100% Pinot Noir
A high-altitude wine from near Villiersdorp, Jessica considers this a superb vintage. This isolated valley is cool and steep, creating the perfect microclimate for Pinot Noir grapes.
Jamie Goode, Wineanorak: “Powerful aromatics of sour cherry, dried herbs, liquorice and tar with nice intensity. The palate has a core of vivid, well-defined sweet cherry and plum fruit with some raspberry freshness. Finishes taut with a lick of sour cherry. So well defined: youthful but with lots of potential, showing some non-fruit complexity too. 95/100“
The Hemel-en-Aarde Ridge is the highest of the 3 ‘Hemel-en-Aarde’ wards, the higher elevation contributing cool evenings and later ripening grapes. With cooling winds from the nearby ocean, the areas around Hermanus produce some the finest Pinot Noirs in South Africa.
Jamie Goode, Wineanorak: “From Place of the Gods Farm, a dryland vineyard 12 km from the sea and lies at 300 m. Granitic soils with quite a bit of clay, clones 115 and 667 planted in 2006. Juicy, bright and focused with lovely raspberry and red cherry fruit, as well as some iron and blood notes. Really intense with fine red fruits and good acidity and structure. Very expressive with fine red fruits and good acidity and structure. Lovely elegance here, allied to structure, with a sour cherry finish. Quite Barolo like, in a good way. 96/100“
Christian Eedes, Wine Mag “Top notes of rose and herbs before cranberry, red cherry and white pepper. The palate is clean and fresh with fine tannins – pure and direct, this shows admirable refinement. Alc: 13.5%. 93/100″
