We have received the last tranche of the Intellego Syrah 2019 - and a tiny allocation of the new Pet Nat...
About Jurgen
Jurgen Gouws started Intellego in 2009 while he was working with Craig Hawkins in the Swartland. He is still based on the Paardeberg, making the wines at Annexkloof.
He leases (and farms) blocks, and works with engaged growers to produce the best possible fruit using organic practices for Intellego.
Jurgen is globally recognised as one of the key players in the natural wine movement in South Africa.
Intellego
In recent years the Intellego (meaning “understand” in Latin) wines have improved dramatically. They had always been exhilarating wines of drama and tension, but the last few vintages have shown a level of detail and finesse that was perhaps missing earlier on.
In our opinion Intellego produces some of the most exciting wine in the country.
We have the our last tranche of the 2019 Syrah available → this was the first vintage that the fruit previously destined for Kolbroek (no longer made) was included, and the 2019 Syrah is a better wine for it.
Benefiting from the spice and tapanade character that the Abbotsdale fruit (based on Koffieklip) adds to the pure, ethereal and bright Paardeberg (decomposed granite) expresses.
Intellego Syrah 2019
“Winemaking involved 100% whole-bunch, semi-carbonic fermentation before 10 months of maturation in old oak. Alluring aromatics of dark berries, lavender, fynbos, earth and spice while the palate possesses dense fruit, lemon-like acidity and grippy tannins before a super-dry finish. Absolutely no affectation in evidence. 94/100″
– Christian Eedes at Winemag
Intellego 'Hey Mila!' 2021
This is a petillant naturel made from Mourvedre – a variety that Jurgen is working with more and more (fans of the Kedungu have already tasted the rewards of this shift).
Very pretty salmon in the glass; light (11% alc), fresh (TA 6.3g/l), dry (RS 3.8g/l) and spicy with some good fruit weight (thanks Mourvedre!).
Jurgen on the label (Intellego labels are ALWAYS ‘interesting’):
“Mila is my wife’s niece and her bubbly personality as a 2.5 year old struck me when they stayed with us pre wedding. Apart from hearing my wife complain about my style her brother calling “Hey Mila” was something I heard often and it grew on me.”
Super low volumes here sadly. Sealed with a crown cap.
