Johan (Stompie) and Anri Meyer are thrilled to introduce the latest vintage of their Mother Rock wines. This release features the debut wines from their northern Swartland farm, Platteklip, in the newly established ward of Piket-Bo-Berg WO, which Stompie personally championed
Stompie’s winemaking philosophy embraces a natural, raw approach, with organic farming at its core. In the cellar he forgoes additions like yeast and acid, and uses sulphur sparingly. He prefers using the skins and stems of the grapes to add texture and weight. By combining organic farming, early picking, and instinctive winemaking, Stompie creates wines that are thought-provoking and delicious to drink.
Piket-Bo-Berg offers a unique terroir ideal for grape growing. Its high altitude—600-800m above sea level—creates a dramatic diurnal temperature variation.  The ward is located in the Northern Swartland, in a small crop of mountains. The vineyards stand out next to the apple orchards and are a mere 36km from the Atlantic Ocean. The soil composition, featuring sandstone “mother rock” with ferricrete (koffieklip) topsoil, further contributes to the wines’ unique characters.
- Stompie with his rocks
Stompie has moved all winemaking to the farm on Piket-Bo-Berg. This means that volumes are much smaller, and he has full control of the ferments. He continues to use concrete and large format foudre for his wines, although he eventually wishes to move completely to concrete.
This is always a stand out from the Force Celeste Range, 30% wholebunch fermented. A flinty, yet still green tea nose is compliemented by a lemony and tealike palate. Perfectly balanced.
“Yellow apple, hay and earth on the nose. The palate is full of flavour. Good fruit density and snappy acidity before a dry finish.”
With a golden yellow hue, this Chenin Blanc looks like it’s going to be rich but has an incredibly bright palate. Green melon, chamomile and honey comb pull through with a pithy finish.
“Quince, apple and potpourri on the nose. Quite lean with a high acidity and a savoury finish.”
“Fermented and aged in old oak, some flor development lending complexity. Cranberry, orange and rose but also nutty, earthy notes on the nose. Good fruit definition and lively acidity before a savoury finish. Not your average innocuous “pink” wine… “
“Subtle notes of cherry, plum, flowers and herbs on the nose while the palate has lovely fruit expression and energy, the tannins fine. Totally charming.”
From 40 year old Chenin Blanc bush vines this is the original skin contact wine from Stompie. Â 100% wholebunch, 16 days fermentation, 5 months of skin contact. This wine has grip.
“From a Paardeberg vineyard planted in 1984. Made with the cap submerged for five months. Orange, pineapple, potpourri, fynbos and ginger on the nose. The palate is relatively lean with fresh acidity and some firm grip to the finish.”
The idea behind “Brutal Wines” is all about embracing a raw, unadulterated expression of wine. It’s a movement within the natural wine world that pushes the boundaries of winemaking even further.
This year is no different to Stompies usual BRUTAL! style – wild, earthy, crunchy. This is his take on a Pinotage: it’s Pinot Noir with a splash of Cinsault.
“Made according to the tenets of the BRUTAL! movement that began in Catalonia – wines to be made on an experimental basis, one per harvest, and no added sulphites. This vintage is Pinot Noir topped with Cinsault and entirely fun-filled. The nose shows an intensely floral note as well as red berries and Rooibos tea while the palate is light and fresh with a savoury finish.”
Winemaker Stompie has had quite a bit of experience with carbonic maceration, but recently has been trying out new techniques, using dry ice to chill the grapes as they come into the cellar. It’s the only wine he still makes from Elgin – it has an incredible fruit power to it with lovely integrated tannins.
“Matured for 11 months in concrete diamonds. The nose is very primary at this stage with notes of raspberry, strawberry, pomegranate and earth. The palate is light and fresh with fine tannins, the finish savoury. Fruit to the fore – not massively structured.”
The very first white wine from the Platteklip farm and Piket-Bo-Berg WO. This wine is a huge deal with tiny quantities. A blend of white varieties grown on Platteklip. Pressed after a 24 hour cold soak.
“Skin macerated, matured for 22 months (“two winters”) in barrel. Exotic aromatics of citrus, peach. potpourri, herbs and spice plus some waxy, lees notes. The palate has dense fruit and punchy acidity before an intensely savoury finish. There’s no shortage of concentration here but the wine has a thrilling tension about it, even so.”
The very first red wine from the Platteklip farm and Piket-Bo-Berg WO. This wine is a huge deal with tiny quantities. Fresh but rich black cherry and spiced fruit nose with a palate reminiscent of black forest cake. This wine really opens up after a few minutes.
50% wholebunch, use of dry ice to displace oxygen, 16 days maceration, aged in old oak.
“Mostly whole-bunch fermented. red and black berries, musk and herbs on the nose. The palate is medium bodied with excellent clarity of fruit, lemon-like acidity and tightly packed tannins, the finish wonderfully dry.”
This is a mixed case of Johan ‘Stompie’ Meyer’s latest release of wines. Including TWO wines from the newly founded Piket-Bo-Berg WO.
