Looking from the famous Brunate vineyard towards the town of La Morra in winter
Unveiling Oddero: A Barolo Legacy
Nestled in the heart of La Morra, one of the eleven communes in the famous Barolo DOCG, Oddero has been a beacon of traditional winemaking since the late 18th century. The Oddero label began in 1878 when Giacomo Oddero first bottled wine under the family name, setting a legacy that continues to this day.
Now managed by Mariacristina Oddero, her son Pietro, and niece Isabella, Oddero remains a testament to the enduring appeal of Barolo’s finest expressions.

Imported to South Africa for the first time, these exquisite wines from the heart of Barolo DOCG, are a paradigm of tradition, terroir, and quality.
Looking from the Gallina vineyard towards the town of Barbaresco
Oddero’s philosophy is rooted in tradition yet embraces innovation where it serves the quality of the wine. They practice organic viticulture, focusing on sustainable farming to preserve the health of their vineyards. Maceration times are long, usually between 20 and 30 days for the Barolo and Barbaresco wines. Ageing is done in large Slavonian oak barrels, a traditional, time-tested method that contributes to the nuanced, layered development of flavours without overpowering the fruit.

"In terms of history and quality, however, the Oddero winery deserves to be framed in the broader context of the Barolo denomination, within which it’s undoubtedly one of the most significant names, both because of the vineyards it owns in some of the most famous MGAs and because of the results they’ve achieved. The quality levels, under the capable and punctilious guidance of Maria Cristina Oddero, have further grown in terms of consistency and the ability to wisely combine attention to detail and respect for the grape variety."

The quality levels, under the capable and punctilious guidance of Maria Cristina Oddero, have further grown in terms of consistency and the ability to wisely combine attention to detail and respect for the grape variety."
With roots tracing back to the late 18th century, Oddero has been central to the development of Barolo wine. They were among the first to bottle their Barolo wines in the late 19th century.
The total surface area of Oddero vineyard property is about 35 hectares, of which 16.5 are cultivated with Nebbiolo for making Barolo and Barbaresco. Notable vineyards include Vigna Rionda, Brunate, Villero, Bussia, and Gallina, each historically known for producing some of the best wines of the Langhe.
Oddero's phenomenal list of MGA holdings
The estate follows a traditional Nebbiolo protocol for their Barolo and Barbaresco, employing long maceration and aging in large, neutral oak botti. The Oddero family say they are not looking solely for power or concentration in their wines, but also delicate perfume and the terroir-specific nuances of the unique blue-grey marl and white sandstone on which the vines are planted.
Traditional large oak casks in the Oddero cellar under the Bricco Chiesa vineyard
We have also imported Oddero’s impressively pure and expressive Barbera d’Alba. It is energised with assertive acidity that perks up bright and brambly fruit notes such as cherry, raspberry and plum. Together with dried herbs, lavender, nutmeg and anise, this wine is vibrant and complex.
The wines of Oddero are not only a testament to the historical and cultural significance of the Barolo region but also to the family’s meticulous approach to winemaking, where each label encapsulates the legacy and unique terroir of their vineyards.
From 15-20 vineyards in Castiglione Falletto and La Morra 230-250 meters above sea level, southern and southwestern exposure, 2.7 x 0.8 meters spacing, 4,700 vines/hectare density, Guyot upward- trained vertical-trellised training system.
Fermented for about 10 days in tank and then aged in French oak for 16 months.
Intense ruby-red color with purple tinges, a bouquet of cherry, blackberry, small red fruits, black pepper and slate with a lovely freshness. Tannins are velvety, with the acid maintaining the classic Barbera backbone. Pure, intense and charming.
2ha, 15 year-old single vineyard in La Morra, Santa Maria Bricco San Biagio. 200 meters above sea level, eastern exposure, 2.8 x 0.9 meters spacing, 4,000 vines/hectare density, Guyot upward-trained vertical-trellised training system.
Maceration for 15 days, followed by ageing in different size oak barrels for 12-18 months.
Red rose, violet, sour red cherry, cranberry, tea, tobacco, liquorice, and truffle on the nose. On the palate the tannins make their presence felt without compromising the balance. Intense, complex and refreshing. The best value wine (in our opinion) of the line-up.
Vineyard: Gallina (Neive) – 200 meters above sea level, southeastern exposure. The soil is strongly characterised by light sand mixed with calcareous marl.
Vine age: a portion is 50 years old, and a more recent one is 13 years old.
Size: 2 hectares
Maceration for approximately 25 days followed by ageing in 4000L oak French and Austrian oak for 12 months.
Antonio Galloni (Vinous):
“The 2020 Barbaresco Gallina is a very delicate, elegant wine that shows the finessed side of this Neive cru. Sweet floral and spice notes meld into a core of red/purplish fruit. Clean mineral notes extend the finish effortlessly. More than anything else, the Gallina is a wine of harmony and finesse more than size. Gorgeous. Drinking window 2024-2036. 92pt“
A Barolo ‘Classico’, so a blend of single vineyards:
Santa Maria Bricco Chiesa (La Morra) – the Oddero ‘home vineyard’, 210 to 290 metres above sea level. Predominantly fine clay, mixed with sand and calcium carbonate.
Capalot (La Morra) – 300 to 310 metres above sea level. Predominantly fine clay, mixed with sand and calcium carbonate.
Bricco Fiasco (Castiglione Falletto) – western exposure, sitting at about 270 metres above sea level. Compact soils, high amount of clay with limestone
Vine age: varies, with the oldest being 60 years old.
Maceration for approximately 20 days followed by ageing in a combination of 4000L, 6000L and 7500L Slavonian and Austrian oak for 30 months.
Antonio Galloni (Vinous):
“A gorgeous wine and also a terrific introduction to this range. Medium in body, with captivating inner perfume, the 2019 is sensual and inviting right out of the gate. Crushed flowers, spice, lavender and rose petal appear later, adding layers of nuance. All the elements are impeccably balanced throughout. What a total delight this is. Drinking window 2024-2034. 91pt“
Vineyard: Brunate (La Morra) – 0.5ha at the top of the vineyard, 300 metres above sea level. Blue-grey marl rich in calcium carbonates and manganese, with a mixture of fine sand and clay as well as limestone.
Vine age: 50-60 years old.
Maceration for approximately 25 days followed by ageing in 2000L oak for 30 months.
Antonio Galloni (Vinous):
“The 2019 Barolo Brunate emerges from a tiny half-hectare plot at the highest elevation in the vineyard. It presents a beguiling mix of all the balsamic notes typical of Brunate, along with an extra bit of mid-palate texture that comes from aging in a slightly smaller cask vis-a-vis the other Barolos. Firm tannins need time to soften. Drinking window 2026-2044. 95+pt.“
Vineyard: Bussia (Monforte d’Alba) – the op of the Vigna Mondoca section of the much larger Bussia MGA. 380 meters above sea level, southwestern exposure. Yellow and white sandstone with calcium carbonate.
Vine age: 35 years old.
Maceration for approximately 30 days followed by ageing in 3000L oak for 36 months (Riserva).
Antonio Galloni (Vinous):
“The 2017 Barolo Riserva Bussia Vigna Mondoca is a gorgeous, sensual wine. The bouquet alone is captivating. Dried rose petal, spice, menthol, leather, lavender and dried herb notes soar out of the glass. The raciness of this warm, dry vintage comes through in the wine’s inner sweetness, but there is terrific freshness and plenty of site character as well. Readers will have a hard time keeping their hands off this jewel of a Barolo. Drinking window 2024-2037. 96pt“
