Tyrrel Myburgh and the team at Joostenberg have been pursuing organic farming on their property since 2003.
As leaders in the field of organic viticulture in South Africa, they have slowly certified all their vineyards, and the last two wines to benefit from this are the Chenin Blanc and Family Blend.
Both of these wines are now 100% from Estate fruit, and 100% organic certified. This is a huge leap in quality for Joostenberg.
Great wine comes from healthy fruit grown in healthy soils. The new labels (image at top) depict the microbiological life under the soil that proliferates when you farm without systemic fungicides and herbicides. These fungi help the roots of the vine take up nutrients present in the soils and better expresses terroir in the fruit.
The wines
Joostenberg Estate Chenin Blanc 2021
100% hand-picked from vines aged from 4 to 39 years. Natural fermentation (no yeast additions). Aged in stainless steel on lees.
Fruit forward and fresh. Aromas and flavours of green apples, pineapple and quince. Beautifully textured and balanced.
Joostenberg Estate Family Blend 2019
Syrah 67%, Mourvédre 33%. Syrah is particularly well-suited to Joostenberg and this is one of several wines in which it plays a significant role. Mourvédre plays a very important supporting role in this vintage. Vine age varies from 4 to 19 years.
Bright, ripe fruit and dark spice leap out of the glass. An excellent balance between freshness and richness. Juicy plum and red berry flavours with a touch of pepper and earth. Very charming.
New-Look. Affordable. Organic. Joostenberg
