Just 1,036 bottles were produced from this inaugural release of Solo Chardonnay, sourced from a single vineyard in Vermaaklikheid on the Cape South Coast. The site sits just 7km from the ocean on limestone and chalk soils, planted to the heat-tolerant CY95 clone. Harvest was determined by taste rather than analysis, with Carl Schultz waiting for the fruit to reach physiological ripeness before picking in the cool of the morning.
Fermented with D47 yeast in older Burgundian barrels (20–25% new), the wine spent 10 months on its lees without undergoing malolactic fermentation. The result is a Chardonnay that prizes purity over power—bright citrus and stone fruit, fine mineral tension, gentle texture and remarkable precision. Restrained oak frames the fruit rather than defining it, allowing this singular Cape South Coast site to take centre stage.
