"..what began as a promising small-scale venture has matured into one of the Cape’s most impressive new-wave wineries."
– Christian Eedes, Winemag.co.za
The release of the 2025 Scions of Sinai collection marks a significant milestone for founder Bernhard Bredell. Not only does it represent the ninth harvest under the label, but it also signals the culmination of a remarkable first decade for one of South Africa’s most compelling new-wave wine projects. With the 2026 vintage set to celebrate ten years since the inaugural growing season, Scions of Sinai arrives at this moment with confidence, clarity and a collection of wines that beautifully capture both place and purpose.
Founded in 2016 and first released from the 2017 harvest, Scions of Sinai is deeply rooted in family heritage. Bernhard is the seventh generation of the Bredell family to farm vineyards in the Lower Helderberg, continuing a legacy that stretches back more than 160 years. Yet while history provides the foundation, the wines themselves speak unmistakably to a modern vision—one centred on authenticity, restraint and an unwavering commitment to terroir.
The philosophy has always been simple: allow the vineyard to lead. The lighter granite soils of the Lower Helderberg, coupled with the cooling maritime influence of False Bay, create wines defined by freshness, balance and a distinctive mineral character. The 2025 vintage appears to be a particularly successful expression of that philosophy.
Describing the growing season as “textbook”, Bredell notes that quality was evident throughout every stage of vineyard development and ripening. Record-breaking winter rainfall replenished dry-farmed bush vines, encouraging healthy growth, while dry conditions from November onwards and the arrival of beneficial winds created ideal ripening conditions. The result is a collection of wines distinguished by elegance, freshness and precision.
Compared to the more concentrated and powerful 2024 vintage, the 2025 wines display a remarkable sense of harmony. There is intensity, certainly, but it arrives through purity and balance rather than sheer weight. Across the range, freshness and site expression take centre stage.
Scions of Sinai ‘Gramadoelas’ Grenache Blanc 2025 100% Grenache Blanc
W.O. Klein Karoo
Inspired by working with continental climate Grenache Blanc in Spain’s Priorat & Montsant regions. From a single vineyard in the Klein Karoo, 460m altitude, on shale soils. Fermentation in 40% stainless steel, 60% 400L & 500L French oak. The good rainfall resulted in low pH’s, a more delicate aromatic profile of lime zest and chamomile with a lean saline acidity and weightless texture. Beautifully dry and with good aging potential.
“Elusive aromatics of lime, white peach, flowers and herbs. The palate is lean but not insubstantial, showing admirable fruit purity and invigorating acidity before a finish that is dry but not aggressively so. Ethereal although that acidity can’t be ignored. 93/100 | Classic” Christian Eedes, Winemag.co.za
Scions of Sinai ‘Granietsteen’ Old Vines Chenin Blanc 2025 100% Chenin Blanc
W.O. Stellenbosch
From a single south-east facing slope on weathered granite soils, dryland farmed and planted in 1978. Fermented in a mix of concrete and old foudre. The porous top soils of the Helderberg allowed for early ripening which resulted in a bright fruit profile with a quiet intensity and length, elegant extract and coating acidity with a fine powdery texture on the finish.
“Subtle aromatics of hay, peach and soft citrus while the palate is intense without undue weight, the tangy acidity beautifully integrated. Layers of flavour unfold gradually before a gently savoury finish. To call it stingy would be unfair but it is certainly understated – cerebral rather than hedonistic. 93/100” Christian Eedes, Winemag.co.za
Scions of Sinai ‘Heldervallei’ Old Vine Cinsault 2025 100% Cinsault
W.O. Stellenbosch
From one of the few remaining old vine Cinsault blocks in Stellenbosch, renowned for its dense fruit profile and concentration. Youthful, bright and pure aromatics, textured structure from mid- palate to dry and grippy finish. Lots of intensity and depth.
“Cranberry and raspberry on the nose plus hints of floral perfume and spice. Excellent fruit purity, bright acidity and fine, chalky tannins, the finish long and utterly dry. Light and energetic, with sufficient mid-palate presence without ever becoming plush. 95/100” Christian Eedes, Winemag.co.za
Grown on open, porous top soils, allowing the grape to ripen mid February before the excessive heat of late summer or early autumn rain. Pure fruit expression of cassis and a hint of dusty earth, violets and black cherry. Slow fermentation and gentle pressing ensure persistent fruit weight and dry finish with abundant fruit tannin structure.
“Exceptionally fragrant with notes of red and black berries, rose, violets and herbs. The palate shows a dense core of fruit, bright acidity and tannins that are firm but not forbidding. Not massively extracted but nevertheless properly structured and convincingly age-worthy. 95/100” Christian Eedes, Winemag.co.za
