When: 28/09/2023 6:30 pm - 8:30 pm
Where: Ex Animo Woodstock, The Palms, Level 2, 145 Sir Lowry Road OR via Live Stream
Skin Contact wines (also known as: Skin-Fermented, Orange, Amber) are made using the skins of the grapes normally used to make white wine. While using the skins is a normal process during red wine production, the skins are usually discarded during white wine production. This activity can provide Skin Contact wines with extra colour and tannin, and give the winemakers access to different flavours and textures when compared with traditionally-made white wines.
Evidence of this style of winemaking goes back thousands of years in Eastern Europe.
Experience an interactive exploration, discussion and tasting with some of the premier winemakers of Skin Contact wines in South Africa. Taste some wines with legends of the Skin Contact world and pitch your questions to the experts.
David Clarke, Director of Ex Animo Wine Co, will host a panel discussion and tasting with three leading producers of Skin Contact wine/Orange wine in South Africa today (all based in Swartland). David will be joined in this multifaceted discussion around all things ‘Skin Contact’ by:
JURGEN GOUWS
Intellego
CRAIG HAWKINS
TESTALONGA
The discussion
These leading producers will tackle topics such as:
What exactly qualifies as Skin Contact wine? Are there clear cut lines between definitions and styles?
Do particular varieties/terroirs lend themselves more to working with Skin Contact?
Where did the inspiration to make these wines come from?
What advantages and challenges do Skin Contact wines have?
What Skin Contact wines we should be buying
Throughout the event we will be tasting various examples of South African Skin Contact wines. These will be from various producers, and not just drawn from the cellars of the speakers. While we won’t be going into detail during the event about each specific wine, they will be used to demonstrate points made on the evening.
David has been communicating, teaching, buying, selling and drinking wine professionally for more than 20 years, working in Australia, United Kingdom and South Africa. He is a Certified Sommelier with the Court of Master Sommeliers and worked at the highest end of fine dining in Melbourne (Vue de Monde) and wine retail (Harrods, London).
