It is always a hugely exciting time of year when we are able to release the new vintage wines from Van Loggerenberg.
It is even more exciting when, for the first time, we have meaningful quantities of the GRAFT SYRAH to offer!
Lukas van Loggerenberg makes his wines on Paarl mountain, and sources most of his fruit from Stellenbosch with important parcels coming from Franschhoek and Swartland.
There is a luxuriousness and generosity to Lukas’ wines, but certainly not at the expense of balance or finesse. A total wine fanatic, he seeks out and drinks top wines from all over the world. While Lukas is inspired by the great wines of the Rhone and Loire Valleys, Burgundy and Barolo, he is certainly not out to produce replicas of these wines. His aim is to create great South African wines – quality is paramount.
It is the 'Graft' Syrah which is arguably his best wine; it certainly is the most awarded
Van Loggerenberg 'Graft' Syrah 2022
While Lukas is totally bewitched by Chenin Blanc and Cabernet Franc, it is the ‘Graft’ Syrah which is arguably his best wine, it certainly is the most awarded.
This is the wine of Lukas’s we get the most requests for throughout the year – by a long way. We are thrilled to be able to offer it in meaningful quantities for the first time.
In the vineyards:
The Syrah vineyard used to produce this wine is planted on Karibib Farm and farmed by Jozua Joubert. The vineyard is planted on a steep south facing slope of the Polkadraai Hills at an elevation of approximately 290m
In the cellar:
The fruit was 100% whole bunch fermented and left to start fermenting naturally with one punch down per day performed. After pressing, the wine underwent malolactic fermentation in barrel and Italian concrete. The different components were blended together after 10 months of ageing and bottled right after. No enzymes or commercial yeast was used in making the wines.
Label story:
Lukas: “The name has several meanings to me. It is not only a reminder of some sage advice from my grandfather who always told me that if you want to make a success of something you need to put in the hard yards and graft (symbolized by the man working in the top left hand corner) but also symbolizes how two individual parts can be grafted together to form a stronger and more meaningful whole as shown by the vines being grafted together. The honeybee and finch are both very hardworking and despite not always knowing if what they are doing will work still graft and get it done. The stamp symbolizes our South African heritage.”
Christian Eedes, Winemag: “Super-complex aromatics of red and black berries, potpourri, dried herbs and white pepper. The palate is medium bodied with fresh acidity and powdery tannins. As with many wines from 2022, this wine doesn’t have the same fruit density as the previous vintage and is already quite open – hugely pleasurable all the same. 95/100.”“
