Here at Ex Animo, we sometimes release wines of our own. We have two such wines to offer today.
Wines listed under the Ex Animo umbrella fall into one of two categories:
(1) wines that we commission to be produced, or
(2) small-batch, one-off wines we bottle as we come across them.
None of them are produced in large quantities.
The & Clarke label is prefixed by the name of the grower and the name of the winemaker. There are a few more of these due to be released later in the year.
Die Hart is our own label, (hopefully) destined for an elevated future.
Rossouw, Gouws & Clarke Dry Red 2020
This is our Pinotage – a 52 year old bushvine vineyard, grown on Langkloof Farm using organic practices by Scholtz Rossouw.
Made again by Jurgen Gouws, with 80% of the fruit fermented whole bunch under semi-carbonic conditions for 10 days. The other 20% of the fruit was pressed earlier and fermented as a rosé and blended back in after malolactic fermentation.
The resultant wine has a juicier mid-palte compared with previous vintages, loads of cherry and raspberry fruit with that characteristic pomegranate tang.
We absolutely adore northern Italian reds here at Ex Animo. Pinotage, weirdly enough, when made without massive extraction and from quality fruit, can remind us of a crunchy Dolcetto d’Alba. Enjoy.
Die Hart Cabernet Sauvignon 2018
This Cabernet – the first wine released under our new Die Hart label – is from the cool Walker Bay and was made by Niels Verburg of Luddite fame.
It has a typical Cabernet Sauvignon palate of blackcurrant, herbs, and suprisingly (as there is 0% new oak), cedar.
We asked Niels to create a wine that is quintessentially Cabernet Sauvignon, and he hasn’t disappointed.
