The Saboteur Red 2017 for the first time includes a small percentage of Grenache Noir. The other varieties are unchanged in Shiraz, Mourvèdre, and Cabernet Sauvignon. The resultant wine has a red-fruited juiciness on the mid palate that has not been apparent in previous vintages. This label continues to evolve and become more sophisticated.
Luddite Shiraz 2016
The Luddite Shiraz 2016 comes from the second year of below average rain fall in Bot River. As in 2015, both the old block and young block were picked together. Half the fruit was fermented in a stainless steel tank and the other half in small, open bin fermenters and about 10% stalks were included to give a little more freshness and complexity. Aged in 30% new oak, all the way down to 6th fill. Bold juicy fruit on the palate with a touch of sweet spice. The mid-pallet is broad, rich and dominated by dark fruit. This is all balanced with dry, firm tannins on the finish.
Luddite Shiraz 2010
The Luddite Shiraz 2010 re-release comes directly from Verburg cellar. The vintage was characterised by a small, concentrated crop with great flavour intensity and the harvest being slightly earlier than normal. The overall ripening was very even with all the clonal batches ripening within a week of each other. A long, slow fermentation occured in large stainless steel tanks with regular pump-overs with plenty of time on the skins to build structure. The wine was transferred to barrel of which 25% new oak was used. The rest of the barrels were 2nd, 3rd and 4th fill. The wine remained in barrel for 24 months. The wine jumps out the glass with dark fruit, cinnamon, mace and black pepper. On the palate is more black fruit and savoury spice with beautifully balanced fruit towards the end. Still very youthful.
