Located in Piedmont, the Langhe is a hilly area southeast of the Tanaro River near the town of Alba. Its name refers to the shape of the hills; “Langa” being an old Piedmontese word for tongue.
The Langhe DOC appellation was established in 1994, and encompasses other DOC and DOCG areas such as Barolo, Barbaresco, Barbera d’Alba, Dolcetto d’Alba, and others. It allows for white, rosé, red, and passito (straw wine) production, and varietal labeling of many indigenous (Arneis, Nascetta, Freisa, Nebbiolo, et al.) and non-indigenous (Riesling, Chardonnay, Pinot Noir, et al. .) varieties.
But the real star of the Langhe DOC is Nebbiolo. It is a designation under which producers can label their declassified Barolo and Barbaresco wines. The production and aging requirements are much less stringent. This is the most common use of the label and the original purpose for which it was enshrined. Essentially, Langhe Nebbiolo is often “baby Barolo”, or “baby Barbaresco”.
This results in Langhe Nebbiolo often being the best value wines in Piedmont.
