Luddite Shiraz deserves its reputation as one of the most cellar-worthy wines of South Africa. Since its inception two decades ago the raison d’être of the wine was for intensity, complexity and long ageing.
Luddite Shiraz (don’t let Niels hear you call it “Syrah”) is one of the icon wines of modern South Africa.
As Christian Eedes puts it: “….it’s unlike anything you may encounter from Stellenbosch, Swartland or just about anywhere else.”.
This wine usually weighs in at 14.5-15.5%, while the 2021 is at 13.6% (14% on the label). This does not mean a “light” year, but one with more red fruit purity and finesse to go with that signature Luddite Shiraz texture and balance, and very importantly, a long, dry finish.
