Winemaker Chris Williams focuses on Rhone valley white varietals, this Viognier is pale in colour, clear and bright with a pronounced greenish hue. The nose has restrained aromatics of citrus, jasmine and sea breeze, but remains elegant and perfumed. These flavours follow through onto the palate which is crisp, linear and refined with crushed fresh fruit, succulent juiciness and finishes with a mineral steeliness.

Chris’ style in the cellar aims to create a wine that is both a true expression of the fruit and a showcase of the terrior. Using both modern and traditional winemaking methods helps him acheive balance between the fruit and the terrior.

The Foundry Grenache Noir 2020 has a vivid ruby hue. Still youthful on the nose there is a distinctive floral fleshy fruit quality with lifted floral, pomegranate and fynbos (garrigue, wild herbs) notes.

Christian Eedes (Winemag): “Grapes from Stellenbosch. 20% whole-bunch fermentation. 30% matured in clay. The nose is still rather primary but pretty with notes of strawberry, cranberry, raspberry, rose and white pepper while the palate shows pure fruit, zippy acidity and powdery tannins. Lovely clarity and plenty of refreshment factor. 92/100.”

 

The Foundry Grenache Noir 2017

The Foundry Grenache Noir 2017 has a youthful deep ruby colour with good intensity on account of the low production per vine. On the nose there is a distinctive floral fleshy fruit quality intensified by black pepper, spice and a sanguine note. The palate is medium bodied with intense crushed dark fruit, peppery spiciness and an intricate fairy-dust like tannic structure. Persistant on the finish, this is delicious now and should improve and hold for up to 10 years.

The first Syrah from The Foundry home farm in the Voor Paardeberg planted in 2002. The vineyard is planted on low vigour, well drained, granitic origin soils with clay subsoil on a southerly slope.
This 2007 Syrah has all the texture and charm you’d expect from Chris Williams.

The Foundry Roussanne 2021 shows vivid fruit concentration and intensity from this cooler vintage. The wine shows intense white pear, floral and lifted mineral and savoury aromas. The palate displays bright, fresh acidity on entry, followed by white peach, lemon curd and bread dough and a very fine crystalline minerality and rounded fleshiness.

The first Syrah from The Foundry home farm in the Voor Paardeberg planted in 2002. The vineyard is planted on low vigour, well drained, granitic origin soils with clay subsoil on a southerly slope.
At 17 years old this wine is ripe for drinking, a classic Syrah made with the intention of being drunk later.

 

The Foundry Grenache Noir 2021

This wine displays a clean, vibrant color with a pomegranate-red core and a ruby edge. The aromatic profile is characterized by distinct notes of fynbos and dried spices. On the palate, the wine exhibits a rich texture supported by well-integrated, velvety tannins and a refreshing acidity. The Foundry Grenache Blanc 2021

The marquis wine from The Foundry and a multiple Platter’s 5 Star winner.

The grapes are sourced from a vineyard next to The Foundry’s home farm in Voor Paardeberg and managed by Chris Williams. Grown on Malmesbury shale and decomposed granite, these trellised vines allow us to precisely manage the canopy to enhance fruit, complexity and balance.

Hand harvested and cooled overnight, this was whole-bunch pressed to restrain phenolics, yet was fermented with a high percentage of solids to give breadth and definition to the palate. 55 % was fermented in seasoned tight grain French oak Allier and Compiègne hogsheads and 45% of the wine in 500 and 1000 liter terracotta clay doliums preserving the crystalline purity and minerality of the wine before bottling after 7 months elevage on lees.

The Foundry Grenache Blanc 2021 has lifted floral aromas with hints of lemon cream and white stone fruit and an ethereal crushed rock minerality. The palate is linear and focused with clean grapefruit and quince fruit flavours, minerally mid palate with characteristic rich, fleshy mouthfeel and texture and has a long finish with a pleasant lingering pithiness.
