Lourens Family ‘Howard John’ 2023

R305.00

“42% Grenache, 29% Cinsault and 29% Syrah, all sourced from Swartland. 40% whole-bunch fermentation. Complex aromatics of red and black berries, fennel, fynbos, olive brine, cured meat and pepper. The palate displays concentrated fruit, lemon-like acidity and fine tannins, the finish deeply savoury. A vintage of sophistication and nuance. Alc: 13.5%.
95/100”

Franco Lourens is based in Paarl and makes his wines in the same cellar as Lukas van Loggerenberg. Previously he was Chris Alheit’s assistant.

He sources fruit from Stellenbosch, Swartland, and in particular Piekenierskloof for his wines.

“Poenie”, as he more widely known, is one of the industry’s ‘Nice Guys’. He always has a smile on his face and is never too far from a laugh and a joke.

Make no mistake though, when it comes to wine, Poenie is totally quality-obsessed. While this means that the wines are superb, it also means that the quantities can be frustratingly small.
