South African Pinot Noir Mixed Case

A fantastic expression of Stellenbosch Pinot Noir, showing the region's ability to produce wines with both elegance and character. From mature vines in Stellenbosch, the wine was made with a light touch. Just 5% whole clusters to add complexity and texture, with the rest of the grapes gently destemmed and fermented in stainless steel. The result is a captivating and elegant Pinot Noir. It is light in colour but has a surprising depth of flavour, it is well balanced and structured. On the nose, you'll find classic, earthy notes of freshly tilled soil, black tea, and a savoury hint of cured meat. On the palate, the time spent in barrel has softened the tannins, leaving a fine, chalky texture. 

Walker Bay’s cool maritime climate has long been one of South Africa’s finest homes for Pinot Noir, and this wine shows why. Slow ripening and clay-rich soils give the wine both freshness and texture, while twelve months in French oak adds depth without overwhelming the fruit.

Expect aromas of raspberry, cherry and rose petal alongside subtle earthy notes. The palate is silky, finely structured and lifted by vibrant acidity, making it as enjoyable with food as it is on its own.

Julien and Sophie Schaal, a talented French couple, bring their expertise to this Pinot Noir. Hand-harvested and matured in older oak barrels, it reveals a harmonious balance of fruit, structure, and acidity. Expect flavors of cherry, raspberry, and subtle spice leading to a long, lingering finish.

KAAIMANSGAT VINEYARD, VILLIERSDORP

Nom stands for nombulelo (gratitude in “Xhosa”) and Nomkhubulwane (a forgotten African goddess of agriculture). Situated at 700m altitude, the vineyard is a place where gratitude is instilled and tales appear. This extreme vineyard site has a shale origin with a significant portion of granite in the topsoil and clay throughout. I believe this gives breadth and power to the Nom. It lies at 700 m above sea level and is surrounded by tall mountains, making for a unique terroir ideal for the optimal ripening for Pinot Noir, in this case clones 115, 667 & 777. The vineyard was planted in 2008.

18 barrels produced.

Grapes are hand-picked, hand-sorted, cold-soaked, leading to spontaneous fermentation. The tannins are optimal after a relatively long post-fermentation maceration and then aging in 228-liter French oak barrels (new and older) for 10 months.
