The summer release of two Craven wines, the Pinot Gris and the Cinsaut, is an exciting start to the release calendar.
Introducing two exhilarating Stellenbosch wines that are utterly compelling: they deliver on texture and refreshment in equal measure.
[Craven] wines tend to have an honesty and authenticity about them, as the new releases from the 2023 vintage bear out, once again.
― Christian Eedes, Winemag
The Pinot Gris is a unique Stellenbosch wine that is vivacious, floral and textured and the Cinsaut is a fresh light red wine that actually has nuance and creates interest.
The husband and wife team represent the artisanal, natural side of the Cape wine scene ... these are minimal intervention, subtle wines that are as much about texture as aromas and flavours. What I like is that they flirt with edginess and “funk” but rarely cross that line so that Craven’s wines avoid falling into the trap of tasting like a philosophy. They just taste…good

ABOUT CRAVEN WINES
Craven Wines is husband and wife winemaking team Mick and Jeanine Craven out of Stellenbosch.
The Cravens produce single variety wines from select single vineyards, exclusively in the Stellenbosch area.
Part of the philosophy central to Craven wines is the belief that well grown grapes require very little, or indeed no, intervention in the cellar.
While they do not own any vineyards, Mick and Jeanine take a very hands-on approach to viticulture, working closely with farmers and growers in Stellenbosch. Their connectedness with the vineyards that they work with is a hallmark of their wines. The
Cravens are just as likely to be found in the vineyards as in the cellar.
Each single variety wine represents the epitome of what that grape can do in Stellenbosch. Their zoomed-in approach is clear, direct and utterly focussed.
We believe that the Cravens are making some of the most exciting wines coming out of Stellenbosch at the moment.
A fine example of single variety Pinot Gris made in a distinct style. Pinot Gris is often classified as a white grape, when in fact the skins take on an amber hue at peak ripeness, giving this wine a reddish bronze colour. The wine’s rich copper colour is thanks to 6 days of skin fermentation, which adds a nuanced textural quality.
Christian Eedes, Winemag.co.za “Pale red with an orange tinge in colour. Compelling and rather exotic aromatics of rose, potpourri, cranberry, orange, herbs, spice and a touch of earth. Good fruit expression and moderate acidity, the tannins possessing a chalky quality. Textured and flavourful with good length.”
A light and refreshing red wine that we love for summer drinking. An elegant wine that is crunchy and fruity, clean and crisp on the palate. There is a refinement and balance between the perfumed fruit and lively acidity. It’s simply delicious.
Christian Eedes, Winemag.co.za “The nose entices with subtle notes of cherry, plum, fynbos, tea leaf and violets. The palate is light-bodied with zippy acidity and powdery tannins. Elegant and understated with a nice energy about it.”
