We are very excited to announce that Ex Animo Wine Co. is now selling vintage 2022 wines from two exceptional Beaujolais producers:
Château Thivin (Côte de Brouilly)
Domaine de la Grosse Pierre (Chiroubles)
Cru Beaujolais refers to the ten highest-quality appellations in Beaujolais, France (see above), producing complex, terroir-driven wines from the Gamay grape. Unlike generic Beaujolais, these crus—like Chiroubles, Côte de Brouilly, and Brouilly—feature distinct soils (often granite) and stricter regulations, yielding age-worthy reds with vibrant fruit, minerality, and structure, crafted by top producers.
The 2022 Beaujolais vintage was warm and sunny, producing ripe, balanced wines with rich fruit, good structure, and aging potential.
"Côte de Brouilly at its finest"
Neal Martin, Vinous.com
Château Thivin, a historic Beaujolais estate on Mont Brouilly, has been family-run since 1877. Now spanning 27 hectares, it’s managed by the fifth and sixth Geoffray generations. Certified organic, its terroir-driven Côte de Brouilly wines are elegant, with vibrant fruit, minerality, and finesse, reflecting Beaujolais’ Côte de Brouilly slopes.
"Pauline Passot makes translucent Beaujolais that is seriously underpriced. Fragrant, delicate, mouth-filling, and very refined."
Jancis Robinson
Domaine de la Grosse Pierre, located on the granitic slopes of Chiroubles in Beaujolais, is a family estate founded in the 1960s by Georges Passot. Now led by third-generation winemaker Pauline Passot since 2018, it spans 9 hectares across Chiroubles (7.7 ha), Morgon (0.8 ha), and Fleurie (0.5 ha). Certified organic since 2024, Pauline crafts terroir-expressive Gamay wines using minimal intervention—native yeasts, gentle vinification, and low sulfur. Her wines offer vibrant fruit, finesse, and minerality. A rising star in natural Beaujolais, the domaine blends tradition with a modern, sustainable ethos.

A wine full of freshness and fruit from the granitic arena of the “Reverdon” locality opposite Mont Brouilly.
This vineyard creates a wine that has elegant fruit aromas and a granitic purity. It is carefully hand-harvested to ensure the highest grape quality. Whole bunch fermentation in the hillside cellars, utilising gravity flow, and a short, 8-day maceration, preserve the fruit’s freshness. The wine is aged for seven months in cement vats, the resulting wine displays a beautiful cherry red hue, a floral and fruity bouquet, a round palate with fresh garden fruit flavors, and supple tannins.
Neal Martin (Vinous.com): “The 2022 Brouilly Reverdon comes from pink granite soils and matures in cement tanks. It has a taut, concentrated, finely delineated nose with a higher proportion of black fruit than previous vintages. The palate is medium-bodied with a plump entry—a mouth-filling Brouilly with mocha and licorice notes toward the finish. There is tangible weight here.“
Château Thivin Côte de Brouilly ‘Les sept vignes’ 2022
“Our traditional wine, blended from our 7 plots on Mont Brouilly.” – Château Thivin
A majority of white-juiced Gamay noir, but also some Chardonnay to provide finesse.
These seven plots of Côte de Brouilly (Clos Bertrand, La Chapelle, Les Griottes, Godefroy, L’Héronde, Henri, and Les Fournelles) all lie on the east, south, and west flanks of Mont Brouilly. Each of these plots is distinguished by its orientation or its position on the slope, and each brings its share of complexity to this wine. The soils are dominated by the “blue stone“ (Metadiorite), stonier for the highest plots and more clayey for those nearer the foot of the hill.
The vines are at a density of 7,000–9,000 vines/ha laid out with grassed and flower strips for the diversification of the flora and to let our small, light tractors through, they alternate tilling with controlled natural grassing. Hand-picking, converting to organic, Terra Vitis certified for 10 years.
Partly fermented in whole bunches in the hillside cellars and matured in oak for 7 months.
We recommend enjoying them after the second year, with a 5–10 years keeping potential.
Neal Martin (Vinous.com): “The 2022 Côte de Brouilly Les sept vignes has vivacious dark berry fruit mixes with subtle hints of melted dark chocolate on the nose. The palate is medium-bodied with firm tannins on the entry, but there is more precision than the Reverdon cuvée and a little more “bite” on the finish. It holds its cards close to its chest at the moment but may benefit from bottle age.“
Château Thivin Côte de Brouilly ‘Les Griottes de Brulhié’ 2022
A majority of white-juiced Gamay noir and a few Chardonnay vines that add finesse (1–2%)
5 ha south-facing vineyard half-way up the hillside; mentioned by Louvet’s History of the Beaujolais Wine Region, written in 1635: “on the hill of Brulhié (Brouilly), in the parish of Oudenas (Odenas) […] which slope or hill bears the best wines of the region”.
Shallow soil over “blue stones” a magmatic rock also called Metadiorite. The vines are at a density of 7,000 vines/ha laid out with grassed and flower strips for the diversification of the flora and to let the small, light tractors through, they alternate tilling with controlled natural grassing. Hand-picking
Converting to Organic, Terra Vitis certified for 12 years.
The grapes are wholly picked by hand and vinified partly in whole bunches in the hillside cellars, whose successive levels allow them to make maximum use of gravity, so as to avoid using either pumps or conveyors for the grapes. After pressing, the wine is matured in oak for 7–9 months.
Neal Martin (Vinous.com): “The 2022 Côte de Brouilly Les Griottes de Brulhié has a wonderful bouquet, beautifully defined with blackcurrant, raspberry and pressed rose petal scents. It just blossoms in the glass. The palate is medium-bodied with pliant tannins and a sweet core of red fruit laced with black pepper and allspice. This is very well balanced with real length on the silky-smooth finish—irresistible Côte de Brouilly at its finest.”
Château Thivin Côte de Brouilly ‘Cuvée Zaccharie’ 2022
Old Gamay Noir vines, average age: 50 years
An area of the Côte de Brouilly appellation on the slopes of Colline de Brouilly, with a fine, well-drained soil, stones of igneous origin (Diorite Porphyry) mixed with clay. East- and south-facing
Vines planted at a high density of 9–10,000 vines/ha, pruned into low goblets, traditional in crus. Ground grassed and partly flowered for Terra Vitis reasoned agriculture. A great many insects are currently repopulating the vineyards.
Hand-picking in small trays to preserve the grape, vinification 13–15 days, pneumatic pressing, 1/10 matured in new barrels, the rest in 1–5-year-old barrels. This wine has developed for 9 months in casks.
This wine comes from the blending of the Château’s oldest vines; plots at La Chapelle in the south and Godefroy in the east.
Neal Martin (Vinous.com): “The 2022 Côte de Brouilly Cuvée Zaccharie matures in Burgundy barrels with around 10% new oak. The palate is medium-bodied with a plush, mocha-tinged entry, fleshy in mouthfeel with a sweet, licorice-laden finish. Fine, it will appeal to those who like a more hedonistic Côte de Brouilly.”
Domaine de la Grosse Pierre Chiroubles 'La Grosse Pierre’ 2022
Gamay 100%
Soils of decomposed granite on an east-facing block
50-year-old vines, family home block.
Organic practice (certification imminent)
The wine is made using whole bunches and semi-carbonic maceration, with no added yeast, no added sulphur dioxide (apart from a little at bottling) and extremely gentle extraction. Aged for eight months in concrete tanks and bottled unfined and unfiltered.
Neal Martin (Vinous.com): “The 2022 Chiroubles La Grosse Pierre has a generous, slightly candied bouquet with Morello cherries, orange liqueur and light blood orange scents. Vivacious! The palate is medium-bodied with finely hewn tannins, very well-balanced with beautifully integrated oak subtlety intertwined on the finish. This is a classy Chiroubles that will be approachable young but also has the substance to age.“
Domaine de la Grosse Pierre Chiroubles 'Aux Craz’ 2022
Gamay 100%
A south-facing vineyard that lies under the Col de Durbize at the top of the village. At 460 metres, the poor, thin soils mean the roots of Passot’s single hectare of 40-year-old vines need to penetrate the rock below.
A single hectare of 40-year-old vines, estate fruit.
Organic practice (certification imminent)
The wine is made using whole bunches and semi-carbonic maceration, with no added yeast, no added sulphur dioxide (apart from a little at bottling) and extremely gentle extraction. Aged for eleven months in concrete tanks and bottled unfined and unfiltered.
Neal Martin (Vinous.com): “The 2022 Chiroubles Aux Craz is more backward and surly on the nose compared to the La Grosse Pierre, the fruit profile darker with light tertiary notes. The palate is well balanced with good grip and fine tension, a more structured Chiroubles with a pleasing marine element surfacing toward the sapid finish. Excellent.“
The “Grille-Midi” cuvée comes from a specific parcel (about 0.8 hectares) that Passot acquired separately from the family estate in 2016, supplemented by an adjacent plot added in 2021 (still in organic conversion as of 2022). This site straddles the border of Chiroubles and Fleurie, at the eastern edge of the Chiroubles appellation, known for its high altitude (among the highest of Beaujolais crus) and granitic soils.
The vines, aged 40–60 years, are farmed organically (certified or in conversion, depending on the plot). Passot emphasizes sustainable practices, including horse-plowed vineyards and low-intervention methods.
100% Gamay
Fermentation using indigenous yeasts, with minimal sulfur. Whole-bunch fermentation is employed, enhancing freshness and fruit expression. Aging occurs over 11–12 months in a mix of 600L oak barrels and concrete egg in 2022, preserving fruit purity while adding subtle texture. No fining or filtration.
Floral (iris, violet) and fruity (raspberry, morello cherry, blackcurrant), with a touch of spice and a saline minerality. Balanced, with fine tannins, rich yet not heavy fruit (slightly compoté in 2022’s warmth), and a structured, lingering finish. Critics note its “solaire et florale” (sunny and floral) approach, suggesting both power and elegance.
