Spioenkop ‘1900’ Sauvignon Blanc 2021

R195.00

Top-class Sauvignon from one of the coldest WOs in South Africa. Koen usually releases this wine with some age, and it makes for a super interesting take on South African Sauvignon Blanc – lovely blackcurrant, green fig and minerality.

“Always a wine that overdelivers in the glass, Koen Roose’s Sauvignon Blanc eschews tutti frutti approachability in favour of a white that’s direct, focused, subtle and stony. Tangy and slatey, with nettle, beeswax and citrus notes and good underlying extract.”
Tim Atkin – 92/100

Belgian native Koen farms a hilltop in the middle of Elgin WO he planted to vines in the early 2000s. A qualified engineer and former sommelier, he has a very clear vision for what he wants to achieve. His wines reflect his European heritage while still reflecting the terroir of Spioenkop. The two new single-site Chenin Blancs are particularly interesting – the ‘Sarah Raal’ is from ferricrete soils and the ‘Johanna Brandt’ is from shale. Brilliant, fine examples of cooler-climate South African Chenin Blanc. Both the Riesling and Pinotage wines are among the best in South Africa.
